EAGLES HOLD ON, NIP KNIGHTS

Franklin County scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error in the bottom of the fourth inning, and the Eagles hung on to beat Cave Spring 8-7 in a Roanoke Valley District baseball game played Tuesday in Rocky Mount.

After the Knights tied the score at 7 on Dave Dunston's two-run single in the top of the fourth, Franklin County (10-3 overall, 8-1 in the district) came back in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff single from Isaac Medeiros. Chad Foutz followed with a drag bunt for a single that also resulted in a throwing error, allowing Medeiros to come home with the run that gave the victory to starter Jeff Hawks (5-1).

In a game peppered with big innings - Franklin County scored six times in the first inning - Eagle reliever David Webster shut down Cave Spring (11-4, 8-2) on two hits and six strikeouts in the final three frames to earn a save.

For the Knights, Kevin Davis was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI 2 doubles and Dave Dunston 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Medeiros and Foutz each had two hits for Franklin County.

In other baseball:

Grayson County (10-4, 6-1) nipped Shawsville 4-2 in the Mountain Empire District by scoring once on a throwing error and another on a ground out to second in the seventh. Freshman Wes Self (6-1) relieved in the sixth to get the victory. Self and Bobby Cheeks were 2-for-3 for the winners.

Shawsville (10-5, 4-2) was led by Brad Dalton, who singled in both of the Shawnee runs in the fourth inning.

At Pearisburg, pinch-runner Bucky Burton stole second and third then scored on Mark Vinson's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Giles (10-5, 6-0) an 8-7 victory over Narrows in the Mountain Empire.

The Green Wave tied the score with four runs in the top of the seventh off Giles ace Mitch Reed (6-0). Brett Mosley, who had two hits and four RBI, blasted a three-run homer, to left-centerfield, Jason Shipbaugh followed with a double and scored on an infield single by Jared Rhodes to tie it 7-7.

In Floyd, Bland outslugged the Buffaloes 15-9 in a Mountain Empire District as Monty Matthews homered twice including a three-run homer in the second and a two-run shot in the seventh. For Floyd County (10-5, 4-4), Monty Moran homered with a runner on board in the first while Peter Bucklin hit a three-run homer in the second.

In Galax, the Maroon Tide bombed Rocky Gap 9-1 in a Mountain Empire District game as Bobby Melton threw a two-hitter while striking out nine. He scored the eventual winning run, had two hits and stole three bases for Galax (6-10, 4-4). Rocky Gap is 0-6, 1-9.

Ricky Helvy scattered nine hits and allowed just two earned runs as Fort Chiswell (3-10, 1-5) won at home over Auburn 10-5 in a Mountain Empire game. Adam Morgan, Dyer Jackson and Peter Kelley were both 2-for-4 for the Pioneers. Steve Francis was 3-for-4 and Bradley Hudgins 2-for-4 for Auburn (4-10, 3-5).

\ SOFTBALL: At Rocky Mount, Stephanie Estes homered, Sarah Meyer had three hits and four RBI, and Ashley Beckner had three RBI as Franklin County (9-7, 4-2) rolled over William Fleming 20-5 in a Roanoke Valley District game.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Rocky Mount, Franklin County edged Patrick Henry 2-1 in a Roanoke Valley District game as Bradley Lang scored the winning goal with 18 minutes left to snap a 1-1 tie.

Keith Mattson scored the other goal for the Eagles (7-2-4, 4-0-3). Jack Edwards scored for PH (6-5-2, 4-1-1). Franklin County can clinch the district title by beating Pulaski County at home on Thursday.

At River's Edge, Keith Cox scored four goals to lead Cave Spring (3-4-4, 3-2-2) past William Fleming 6-3 in a Roanoke Valley match. Kevin Graham had three goals for the Colonels (8-5, 2-5).

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Roanoke Valley Christian defeated North Cross 8-1 on Tuesday to give the Eagles their first Virginia Independent Conference Southern Division boys' tennis championship.

Wilson Pasley, Hampton Pasley, Simon Foster, Jay Plemmons and Mark DeLong won singles matches for RVC (11-0), and all five were on winning doubles teams - Wilson Pasley paired with Ben Thomas.

James McHose of Christiansburg defeated Adam Neal of Radford 6-4, 6-0 and Robert Gibb of Blacksburg downed Chad Collins of Carroll County 6-0, 6-0 in the individual semifinal matches in the New River District boys' tournament at Dedmon Center courts at Radford University.

In doubles competition, McHose teamed with Greg Habeeb to down Neal and Steve Amonette 6-2, 6-3 and Gibb teamed with Justin Turner to beat Collins and Ashley Dalton 6-2, 6-0.

The district team and individual championships will be played Thursday. Top-seeded Blacksburg and second-seeded Christiansburg will play for the championship. Team competition begins at 9 a.m., and the individual championships will follow in the afternoon.

\ GIRLS' TENNIS: Emily Gibb of Blacksburg defeated Amy Powell of Christiansburg 6-0, 6-0 and Cathy Richardson beat Christy Johnson of Carroll County 6-0, 6-0 in the individual semifinal matches in the New River District girls' tournament at Dedmon Center courts at Radford University.

In doubles competition, Gibb teamed with Stephanie Read to defeat Powell and Rebecca Wright 6-3, 6-3 and Richardson and Ashleigh Funk downed Johnson and Amy Weems 6-0, 6-1.

The district team and individual championships will be played Thursday. Top-seeded Blacksburg and second-seeded Radford will play for the girls' title. Team competition begins at 9 a.m., and the individual championships will follow in the afternoon.
