APPEALS DENIED; GACY EXECUTED

John Wayne Gacy, convicted 14 years ago of the sex-related killings of 33 young men and boys, was killed by lethal injection early Tuesday.

The execution followed last-minute appeals by Gacy's lawyers, asserting their 52-year-old client was mentally incompetent and Illinois' execution method was unconstitutional. No state or federal judge, including U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, would stay the execution.
