Events showcase Bent Mountain

BENT MOUNTAIN - "Take a Walk on the Wild Side" is an exploration of the natural beauty of Bent Mountain to be held May 20 and 21. A slide show will be presented on May 20, 7-9 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke, 2015 Grandin Road. Refreshments will be served, and a silent auction of works from local artists and craftspeople will be held.

On May 21, a bird walk will start at 6 a.m.; a wildflower walk at 10 a.m.; and exploration of streams and ponds at 1 p.m. Meeting sites for the walks are Bent Mountain Elementary School or Bent Mountain Rescue Squad parking lot.

There is an admission charge for all events with proceeds going to the Blue Ridge Interstate Impact Network. For details and registration, call Jan Dowling at 774-9301.

Arts center group meets

BLACKSBURG - Creative Arts, Inc., a new non-profit arts organization formed to oversee the development and management of a community arts center, will hold a public meeting on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Blacksburg Municipal Building council chambers, 300 S. Main St.

The new center will be located at 1711 N. Main St. and will have music, dance and multi-media studios, a 100-seat theatre, art gallery, photography lab, arts library and weekend jazz coffeehouse.

Fox cable service starts

BLACKSBURG - Blacksburg Cable TV will be delivering fX, Fox's new 24-hour cable channel, to local cable households on June 1. Found on channel 25, fX broadcasts live original programming with contemporary television classics.

Street recovering starts Monday

BLACKSBURG - Phase one of the town's annual street resurfacing program will begin on Monday. Residents will be notified to move cars parked on the street the day before paving. For more information, call Bruce Simpson at 961-1142

Akers Street from Dehart to Fairview

Mount Tabor Road from new pavement to corporate limits

Graves Avenue from Palmer to the golf course

Reynolds Street from Palmer to dead end

Upland Road from South Main to dead end

Hearthstone Drive from Giles to Dickerson

Carroll Drive
