Town Council seeks volunteers

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Christiansburg Town Council is looking for volunteers to join a beautification effort called "Hometown Proud."

The council's Visual Enhancement Committee, itself a group of volunteers, has been working since February to come up with a plan to landscape and beautify the town's entrances. In addition, council approved a $25,000 budget for the plan, to serve as the "matching funds" portion of a Department of Transportation grant for which the committee applied. The only thing missing now are the warm bodies to put it all in place.

Phase I will include landscaping the planter boxes and areas around the "Welcome to Christiansburg" signs and in the downtown area. Phase II will include landscaping traffic islands, while Phase III includes erecting display boards for civic club emblems. Later plans include more median work, landscaping along Crab Creek on Franklin Street and placing lights in the pear trees in the downtown area.

Citizens interested in working on this project should call Kathy Mantz at 382-4251 (days) or 639-4680 (evenings).
