UVA WOMEN ELIMINATE W&M

Defending national champion Virginia scored three goals in the final 2 minutes, 41 seconds of the first half to build a 5-1 halftime lead and held on to beat William and Mary 8-4 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA women's lacrosse tournament at Scott Stadium on Saturday.

The fourth-ranked Cavaliers advanced to their fourth consecutive national semifinal behind three goals by Cherie Greer. Virginia (13-3) plays Princeton on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in College Park, Md.

Virginia took a 3-0 lead and held W&M (11-6) scoreless until Kristin Gould scored with 2:13 left in the first half. Greer followed with her third goal 20 seconds later and Lisa Pizak scored to give the Cavaliers a four-goal lead with 37 seconds left.
