AUSTIN LIFTS BUCS TO WIN

Jake Austin smashed a three-run homer to highlight a four-run eighth inning Sunday as the Salem Buccaneers rallied to beat the Kinston Indians 4-3 in a Carolina League baseball game at Grainger Stadium.

Austin's homer spoiled the pitching performance of Kinston's Casey Whitten (2-5), who had shut out the Bucs through seven innings. Whitten struck out 10 before giving up four runs with two outs in the eighth.

Jon Farrell started the rally with a single and advanced on Ramon Zapata's one-out single. Jason Kendall's two-out RBI single scored Farrell and set the stage for Austin, whose homer was his sixth of the season.

Matt Reubel (2-0) picked up the victory for Salem, and Marc Pisciotta earned his ninth save by pitching a scoreless ninth. \
