SMITH LEADS QUALIFYING FOR STATE AM, OPEN

Roanoker Mike Smith fired a 1-under-par 141 over two rounds at Roanoke Country Club on Monday to lead local qualifying for the Virginia State Amateur Championship and AMF-Signet Open of Virginia.

Qualifying was also held at the Water's Edge Country Club in Penhook, with Lexington's David Brogan shooting 1-over 145 to earn a spot in both tournaments. Ridgeway's Steve Gilley was also at 145 and led six players in the qualifying for the State Am, which is June 30-July 4 at the Robert Trent Jones Country Club in Lake Manassas.

The other State Am qualifiers at Water's Edge were Danville's Jimmy Flippen (147), Roanoke's Ron Willard Jr. (150), Bobby Evans (151) and Jimmy Forehand III (152).

Nine other players qualified for the State Am at Roanoke Country Club, including Keith Myers (145) and William Byrd's Ryan Ketron (147). David Hagadorn, Chris Clemens and Adam Harrell were at 147 and Jack Tuttle, Matthew Martin and Scott Hunter qualified at 148.

In State Open qualifying at Roanoke, Barry Graham (142), Ketron, Ned Baber (147), Clemens and Harrell all earned spots along with Smith. At Water's Edge, Bill Sibbick (148) of Martinsville and Brian Perdieu (151) were the other qualifiers.

The State Open is July 14-17 at Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond.

In other sports in the region:

Former Virginia football standout Antonio Rice has been named to the staff of the Virginia Student Aid Foundation (VSAF). Rice, a 1986 UVa graduate, will work in marketing and public relations for the VSAF's annual fund and capital campaign.

The Inner City Streaker Track Club sent a 16-athlete delegation to Richmond for the U.S. Amateur Track and Field state meet and 15 qualified for the Junior Olympics.

Winners from Roanoke were Tiffany Mitchell in the 100 and 400 meters for midget girls, James Hickenbotham in the 100 and 200 for youth boys, Brent Jackson in the 100 and 400 and long jump for midget boys and Demare Gill in the youth long jump. Marvette Hodge and David Cabbler claimed 200 midget hurdles titles.

The Junior Olympics are July 6-7 in Emmitsburg, Md., with all qualifiers in that meet advancing to the USAT&F Nationals in Gainesville, Fla., from July 26-31.
