DURHAM HOLDS OFF SALEM

THE BUCS nearly overcome a seven-run deficit before succumbing to the Bulls 9-7.

\ The Durham Bulls let a laugher turn into a serious matter before disposing of the Salem Buccaneers 9-7 in a Carolina League baseball game Tuesday at Durham Athletic Park.

Durham (6-2) held a 9-2 lead over Salem (3-5) after seven innings, but the Bucs rallied for five runs in the top of the eighth to make a game of it. Chance Sanford's three-run home run was the big blow in the inning for Salem.

In the top of the ninth, Marcus Hanel led off with a single for the Bucs, but he was picked off after making a wide turn at first. Durham's Aaron Turnier then struck out the next two Salem batters to pick up his second save.

Tony Stoecklin (3-3) picked up the victory with five innings of work in a spot start for Matt Murray, who was promoted to Greenville, the Atlanta Braves' Class AA affiliate, earlier in the day.

Damon Hollins paced the Bulls with two hits and four RBI, including a three-run homer in the first inning. Raymond Nunez and Brad Rippelmeyer added home runs.

Hanel had three hits for the Bucs.
