SCRUTINY MOUNTS ON TAX-EXEMPT OPERATIONS

Since the late 1980s, the Internal Revenue Service has examined the books of the Christian Broadcasting Network to find out if founder Pat Robertson has misused the tax-exempt charity for political or financial gain. A total of 20 media evangelists are under scrutiny by the IRSS, according to a congressional report.

If the IRS finds any misuse of money in these cases, it has only one penalty at its disposal: removing the organization's tax-exempt status. The government is reluctant to do that because it cripples a charity's good works and causes an public uproar.
