NEW RIVER PEOPLE

The New River Valley Workshop recently honored R. JACK RILEY, retiring rehabilitation and human resource manager, after 17 years of service.

Pearisburg Boy Scout Troop 34 recently held its first Eagle Court of Honor for MICHAEL GRAYSON SHANNON and CHARLES RAYMOND HENDERSON JR. .

Shannon, son of Thomas and Mary-Paul Shannon of Pearisburg, earned his Eagle badge June 22. For his project, using a standard water pressure color code, Shannon and seven helpers painted the tops of all the fire hydrants on the Pearisburg Water System. He also color-coded two maps showing the location and pressure of each hydrant. The maps went to the Pearisburg town engineer and the Pearisburg Volunteer Fire Department.

Shannon became a scout in 1986.

Henderson, son of Charles and Linda Henderson of Thessalia, earned his Eagle badge on Dec. 20. For his project, Thessalia United Methodist Church received a handicap ramp. He enlisted the help of eight people who assisted him in the design and building of the ramp.

Henderson has been a scout since 1986.

Resource Bancshares Mortgage Group Inc., a South Carolina-based mortgage banking firm, has appointed MILTON SHOWALTER, a native of Christiansburg, assistant vice president and manager of pool delivery and inventory control. Showalter received his bachelor of arts degree from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C.

The Radford City School of Practical Nursing held its capping exercise June 13. Those receiving their caps were: DONNA ALTIZER, AIESHA ANDERSON, DEBRA ASSAD, BRENDA ATKINS, SHELIA BOND, DEBRA DeJESUS, AUGUST DULANEY, KRISTAL FULCHER, MEGGAN HALL, RHONDA MUSSELMAN, VIRGINIA PRINGLE, DEBRA ROAN, BRANDI ROBINSON, MICHELLE SHEPHERD, JENNIFER SIMPKINS, PAMELA SMITH, REBECCA VIERS, KIMBERLY WALLACE, RAYNETTE WEST and APRIL WOOLWINE. The students now progress to the clinical phase of the program.

KIM ALEXANDER, daughter of Willie Alexander, Radford, has been elected to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and colleges for 1994-95. Alexander attends Winston-Salem (N.C.) State University.

SOUTHSIDE GARDEN CLUB held its July meeting at the Warm Hearth Activity Center.

Co-hosts were Mrs. R.W. Hendricks and Mrs. E.V. Russell Jr. The program was presented by Mrs. Daniel Ludwig. Members winning blue ribbons for horticulture were Mrs. Thomas Caceci, Mrs. Hendricks and Mrs. Ludwig.

The Rotary Club of Montgomery county installed officers at its June 29 meeting. Officers for 1994-95 are: CHIP WORLEY, president; DAVE TUGGLE, president-elect; BONNIE SVRCEK, vice president; ELAINE SCOTT, secretary; BOB POFF, treasurer; FRAN MITCHELL, sergeant at Arms; and DAN LUDWIG, past president.

EAA Chapter 906 held its YOUNG EAGLES PROGRAM June 26 and the following youngsters were flown and are now Young Eagles: VIRGINIA TINSLEY; BOBBY TINSLEY; JESSY TINSLEY; CHRIS TINSLEY; CHRISTI STAFFORD; LUCAS TINSLEY; TIM BILLINGS.

The National Library of Poetry announces that CHARLES D. CRISPIN of Pulaski has been published in "Outstanding Poets of 1994."
