PATRICK OPENS WITH VICTORY

Defending champion Anne Patrick of Richmond opened defense of her Virginia Women's Amateur crown in Hot Springs with a 4-and-3 victory Tuesday over Jessica Adams of Bassett.

Four-time champion Jane Mack of Richmond lost to Natalie Easterly of Richmond's 5 and 3 over The Homestead's Cascades Course in Tuesday's match play.

Fran Hensley of Ridgeway beat Sarah Kayson of Alexandria 3 and 2 in the championship flight.

In other first-round action: Countryside's Kathy Dodd won 3 and 1 over Melissa Trowbridge in the first flight; Roanoke's Valeta Pittman won 2-up over Mary Sullivan in the first flight; Anne Kite of Waters Edge won 5 and 4 over Beverly Stikas in the second flight; and Neva Price of Blue Hills Country Club won 5 and 4 over Sue Adams. Lee Shirley of Roanoke lost 1-up to Shawn McCullough of Alexandria.

Chris Epperly of Virginia Beach, Robbye King Youel of Charlottesville, Ruth Ann Verell of Alexandria and Betty Hoffman of Virginia Beach all scored easy victories in the opening round of the Virginia Women's Senior Championship.

Roanoke's Audrey Najjum over Peggy Woodard 1-up with an eagle 2 on the 19th hole in the championship flight; Brenda Brown of Willow Creek over Genie Evans, 4 and 3 in the second flight; Eleanor Meredith of Waterfront Country Club over Susan Nicely 2-up in the second flight; Nina Farriss of Lexington over Vi Kramer 3-up in the second flight; Frances Dillon of Waterfront over Joyce Davis 3 and 2 in the third flight; Madeline Hylton of Blacksburg over Joyce Winbigler 2-up in the third flight; Joann Jacobs of Water's Edge Country Club over Louise Lowry 5 and 3 in the fourth flight; and Evelyn Anderton of Roanoke Country Club advanced with a bye in the fifth flight

The Roanoke Hawks boys 14-under basketball team advanced to the championship round of the AAU national championship in Des Moines, Iowa. The Hawks beat Oklahoma 71-66 Tuesday to finish 2-1 in pool play. The Hawks play an undetermined opponent today.
