HOMERS TRIP BUCS

The Wilmington Blue Rocks used two home runs in the final inning to beat the Salem Buccaneers and the weather Friday night, winning 3-2 in a Carolina League baseball game shortened to five innings because of rain and lightning.

With a storm threatening, Steve Murphy led off the bottom of the fifth and drew a walk from Bucs starter Dave Doorneweerd. After Johnny Damon flied to right field, Murphy stole second and Steve Sisco followed with a two-run homer to tie the score.

After the second out, Larry Sutton hit his 19th home run of the season to produce what proved to be the winning run for the Blue Rocks (14-13).

With one out in the top of the sixth, the storm hit. The game was called after a 30-minute wait.

Salem (11-16) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. After Jason Kendall reached on an infield single with one out, Jake Austin launched his 15th homer of the year.

Robert Toth picked up the victory for Wilmington, giving up six hits and both runs in five innings. He walked one and struck out four.

Doorneweerd (3-5) took the loss. The Salem starter surrendered five hits and two walks and struck out two.

The teams meet again tonight, with Jason Abramavicius (3-3) scheduled to start for the Bucs and Bart Evans (6-1) on the mound for the Blue Rocks in a 7:05 game.
