USTA EVENT LOSES TOP QUALIFIER

Aarthi Venkatesan of Tampa, Fla., ousted the qualifying bracket's No.1 seed in the USTA Women's Circuit of Roanoke tennis tournament Monday and will try today for a spot in the 32-player main draw of the $10,000 event.

Venkatesan, whom tournament officials said is originally from India, beat top-seeded qualifier Yoshiko Sasano of Japan 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 to advance to one of four qualifying finals matches today. At 9 a.m. at Hunting Hills Country Club, Venkatesan will play Tara Snyder of Wichita, Kan., who beat Saskia Hermans of Belgium 6-2, 6-4 on Monday.

Main-draw matches begin today at Hunting Hills, featuring a 6 p.m. match between Elizma Norije of Namibia and Kristina Brandi of Bradenton, Fla., the main draw's second seed.

Other qualifying matches, all at Hunting Hills, whose winners advance to the main draw: Anne Covert of Austin, Texas meets Lucie Ludvigova of the Czech Republic following the Venkatesan-Snyder match; Jackie Moe of Edina, Minn., the 12th-seeded qualifier, meets Jody Yin of Madison, N.J. at 9 a.m.; and Jennifer Callen of Concord, Mass., the 15th-seeded qualifier, plays Kelly Pace of Montgomery, Ala. at 9 a.m.

To reach today's qualifying finals, Covert beat Canada's Kristine Smith, 14th seeded in qualifying, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3; Ludvigova defeated ninth-seeded Anna Moll 6-1, 6-4; Moe beat Tracy Jean Kotseos of Winter Springs, Fla. 6-3, 6-3; Yin topped Dorota Wozniak of Canada, the 13th seed, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1; Callen beat Liza Andriyani of Indonesia 6-1, 6-4; and Pace beat Nicole Kenneally of Australia 6-4, 6-2.

Tickets for today's play are $2 and may be purchased at the gate.

In other sports in the region:

nRoanoke's Ryan Ketron shot a 3-under-par 69 to take the lead in the 16-18 age division after one round of the Smith Mountain Lake Junior Open golf tournament at The Waterfront Country Club.

Bradley Black of St.Catharines, Ontario, and Brian Agee of Roanoke were two shots back. The next closest challengers were Brian Hill of Roanoke, Wes Cothran of Forest, Jared Stanley of Sterling and Shane Brackin of Providence, N.C. - all at 75.

William Haley of Danville shot 74 and has a one-stroke advantage over Roanoke's Jason Orlando and Brandon LaCroix in the 13-15 age division.

Lee Taylor of Roanoke took a commanding lead in the 11-12 age division with a nine-hole total of 3-under 33, nine shots ahead of Matt Chandler of Glade Hill.

Joannah Pattison of Wytheville fired a 79 and leads the girls' open division by one shot over Shelley Scruggs of Gretna. Danielle Ware of Danville is at 82, Mandy Martin of Richmond is at 83 and Cammie Tutwiler of Harrisonburg shot an 89.

Gilbert Bell of Cape Charles, Va., recorded the first hole-in-one of the tournament's four-year history. Competing in the 16-18 age division, Bell aced the 147-yard No.4 hole en route to a first-round 79.

Competition concludes today.

The Roanoke Star under-15 White boys' soccer team played to a scoreless tie with East Anglia in the Vildbjerg Cup Tournament in Denmark. Ryan Caya got the shutout for Roanoke, which was outshot 6-4 by its British opponent. Caya got defensive help from Adam Meneen. The Roanoke team plays two games today in the prestigious Dana Cup youth tournament in Hjorring, Denmark.

The Cave Spring American Little League 12-year-old All Stars won the District 12 tournament and advanced to the state Little League tournament with a 12-6 victory over Clifton Forge in Roanoke. Marshall Morioka had two home runs and six RBI for Cave Spring, which went 5-1 in the district tournament. Adam Flora and John Evans Lagueux added two hits each, and Brian Snow picked up his third tournament victory. Cave Spring will opens state play Friday in Fairfax.

In Crewe, the Cave Spring Dixie Pony Tails softball team advanced to the championship game of the state tournament with a 7-6 victory over Crewe in seven innings. Mary Thomas led off the seventh with a single and scored the winning run on a single to left by Jennifer Fleshman. Cave Spring, which battled out of the losers' bracket, will face Amherst, undefeated in the winners' bracket, today for the state title. If Cave Spring wins, the teams will play again Wednesday.
