UMW courts nylon workers

A union known more for mining coal than making nylon is signing up employees at DuPont's nylon yarn plant in Martinsville.

The United Mine Workers union has been circulating petitions among DuPont employees seeking to represent them as collective-bargaining agent. The organizing effort is being undertaken with the blessing of the Martinsville DuPont Nylon Employees Council, which represents the workers.

Clinton Jennings, president of the council, confirmed the UMW was signing up employees at the plant but declined to talk further about the matter. He said details would be discussed during a news conference sometime later this week or next.
