CALIF. MAN INDICTED ON DRUG CHARGES

A federal grand jury in Roanoke indicted a California man Thursday and charged him with directing a conspiracy to ship crack cocaine and marijuana from Los Angeles to Lynchburg.

The indictment alleges that Vincent Lyndell Young supplied drugs to a gang in Lynchburg that was involved in an April drive-by shooting and Hollywood-style chase that ended with four arrests.

According to the indictment and an affidavit filed in court, two undercover vice officers were on surveillance when they saw a van spray bullets into a Lynchburg house. When they gave chase, a man leaned out of the van and began firing shots at the officers.

Neither the van nor the officers was hit before the van stopped short of a police roadblock.

Edgar Pitts of Los Angeles; Steve Flowers of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Anthony Tucker of Madison Heights; and Lorenzo Johnson of Lynchburg were indicted on drug conspiracy charges in May.

One of the suspects, Steve Rowland, escaped and returned to California. He and his girlfriend were found dead in Los Angeles in May.

The indictment alleges that Young killed the couple over drug debts in Lynchburg.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom Bondurant said Young then ordered the firebombing of the home of a witness who saw him kill Rowland.

The indictment alleges that Young visited Lynchburg in June to investigate the state of his drug business after the arrest of some of his workers. Young has been charged only with drug conspiracy in Virginia. Bondurant said he faces murder charges in Los Angeles.
