SWIMMER DROWNS IN JAMES RIVER

A Dillwyn man drowned while swimming in the James River near Hatton Ferry Landing, authorities said.

Arthur J. Taylor, 26, drowned about 6 p.m. Saturday, said Deputy T.H. Cox of the Buckingham County Sheriff's Office.

Capt. Tim Karr of the Scottsville Rescue Squad said Taylor apparently dove into about 8 feet of water while swimming with relatives. A family member called the rescue squad.

Taylor's body was found in water about 4 feet deep, Karr said.

Karr said the James River has a rocky bottom, and the water was swift and cloudy because of heavy rain the past few days.
