DEAL COULD BRING WORK TO ROANOKE

Littlefield, Adams & Co., the San Antonio-based parent of Roanoke's Collegiate Pacific Inc., said Friday it has signed a sportswear license agreement that could bring more work to the already busy screenprinting company.

Under the agreement signed with R. Josephs Sportswear, owner of the Laguna trademark, the Littlefield, Adams Funwear subsidiary will produce and distribute clothing bearing the Laguna logo. The license began Aug. 1 and will run through 1997.

Littlefield, Adams spokesman Don Merrill Jr. said the bulk of the new work likely will be done at the Funwear division's Dayton, Ohio, plant, which is geared toward such mass production. But he added that Collegiate Pacific may receive some of the work as well.

Gene West, president of Collegiate Pacific, said it is too soon to predict future production.

"In all likelihood, some of it will be produced in Roanoke," West said. "But, honestly, we're doing about what we can do right now."

Without starting another production shift, the Roanoke company would be hard-pressed to take on much additional business, he said. Collegiate employs between 55 and 60 workers.

With a view to future expansion, however, the screenprinting company recently bought additional production equipment, West said.

"We're gearing up to take the next step to increase productivity," he said.
