MAN KILLED AT JOB SITE

A Roanoke man was killed early Friday when he was pinned under a large piece of equipment at a job site in Roanoke County.

Brent Mittel, 40, a milling superintendent with Lanford Brothers Co. Inc. of Roanoke, was loading a milling machine onto a tractor-trailer when the machine rolled off the truck and trapped him underneath, according to state police and a written statement by Lanford Brothers.

The accident occurred about 2:45 a.m. at a Virginia Department of Transportation job site on Interstate 81 just south of the Wildwood Road exit.

Rescue workers were unable to free Mittel, who died at the scene, police said.
