FIRED MAN FACES CHARGE OF SHOOTING AT EX-BOSS'S HOME

Michael S. Hartless said he wanted to shoot the people who had fired him from his job, a search warrant claims.

Less than an hour after making that statement, according to the warrant, he shot one bullet into his former supervisor's Salem home.

No one was injured during Monday's incident, police said.

Hartless surrendered to Salem police Thursday and was charged with shooting into an occupied dwelling, a felony.

In late June, Hartless was fired from Timber Truss Housing Systems Inc. for violating company policies, authorities said.

Monday night, he drove to the Salem company and talked with co-workers. He told them he wanted to shoot out windows at the facility and wanted to shoot those who had gotten him fired, according to the search warrant affidavit.

Workers at Timber Truss saw two guns in the rear seat of Hartless' 1989 Chevy. A car described as Hartless' was seen later Monday night in the vicinity of the shooting in the 2200 block of Irish Circle.

Police searched Hartless' Southwest Roanoke County residence in the 4100 block of Cresthill Drive. They found five .22-caliber bullets.

At another residence in Roanoke County, police found one .22-caliber rifle and one shotgun.
