METHODISTS' CAMP MEETING STARTS AUG. 21

United Methodists gather Aug. 21-24 at 7 each evening for the annual camp meeting at the historic PAGES MEETINGHOUSE near Fairlawn. This marks the 11th annual camp meeting in the current series, sponsored by United Methodist churches of the Radford, Floyd, Pulaski and Dublin areas.

The Rev. Dr. J.N. Howard, senior pastor of First United Methodist Church in Marion is the preacher. Beth Green of Radford directs the music, which features area choirs each evening.

Pages Meetinghouse was the site of the first Methodist meetinghouse west of the New River, organized in 1773. It's right off U.S. 11, west of Radford, on Hickman Cemetery Road. The original church building no longer exists, but a plaque marks the site. A camp meeting pavilion, built in 1986, seats 300.

On Aug. 21, dinner is served from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. for $3. A concert by the Pulaski-Dublin Children's Music Camp gets under way at 6:30 p.m. Music starts at 6:45 the rest of the week. The Rev. Clarence Dishman can tell you more at 639-2807.

Participants in the fourth annual MUSIC CAMP '94 at First United Methodist Church in Pulaski present "Famous Kids of the Bible" Sunday at 5 p.m. at the church, 135 Fourth St. On Aug. 21, they perform at Dublin United Methodist Church and at Pages Meetinghouse, and Sept. 11 at Randolph Avenue United Methodist Church.

The campers preview "Famous Kids of the Bible" Sunday during First United Methodist's 9 a.m. worship service, and at Pages Camp on Aug. 21. Barbara Shomo directs the camp, which had about 50 enrollees this season.

HAPPENINGS

Gateway Baptist Church, 2196 Harding Road, Blacksburg, holds "Fun Day at Gateway," today, 5-8 p.m. at the church. All are welcome for the hamburger cookout, games, puppets, prizes, Bible stories and more. Call the church, 552-2184, or Sherry Burke, 382-1452.

Centennial Christian Church, McCoy, breaks ground for a new church building during its homecoming Sunday. A potluck luncheon follows the 11 a.m. worship service, and the groundbreaking gets under way at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Gordon Lee, 639-6196.

Camp Bethel United Methodist Church (formerly Camp Creek and Bethlehem churches), Floyd County, celebrates homecoming Sunday, Aug. 21. Worship services start at 11 a.m.; a potluck lunch and singing with the Heavenly Visions follows.

Zion Hill Baptist Church, Radford celebrates its annual homecoming Sunday. Dinner is served after morning services. Afternoon services start at 3:30.

The Rev. Charles H. Charlton of Friendship Baptist Church in Johnson City, Tenn. signs copies of his new book "The Agony and Ecstasy of the Ministry" today 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Amen Christian Bookstore in Radford.

To commemorate the International Year of the Family, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints holds community open house Sunday, 6 p.m., at its three area locations: 700 Porter St., Blacksburg; U.S. 460 Pembroke and 700 Pendleton St., Radford.
