LAST FOOTBALL SEASON FOR WILLIAMS

Bob Williams, one of Timesland's football legends, made it official late Friday, saying he will step down as Parry McCluer's coach after this season.

Williams, whose teams have won five state championships, said he has been contemplating retirement for several years. He serves as principal of the middle school in Buena Vista and felt both jobs had become too much.

Williams nearly gave up his position at Parry McCluer to become the first coach at the new Rockbridge County High School. However, he remained at Parry McCluer and his team reached the Group A Division 1 semifinals in 1992, losing 8-6 to eventual state champion Appalachia.

Williams, who was scouting and unavailable for comment Saturday, won his last state championship in 1987. The Fighting Blues lost their first two games that year to Powell Valley (23-20) and Alleghany (21-19) before reeling off 12 victories. Parry McCluer beat Strasburg 21-14 for the state crown.

Williams' last state finalist was in 1991, when Parry McCluer rolled to a 12-1 record before losing 35-15 to William Monroe in the Division I championship game.

Williams, a graduate of Washington and Lee University and a disciple of legendary Lexington coach Pete Brewbaker, carries a 196-46-4 record into Parry McCluer's opener Friday at Radford.
