BLACKBURN, Noval William, (``Blackie""), 71, of Vinton, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 1994, at the residence. He was retired from Shenandoah Pride and served with the U. S. Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Stump Blackburn; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra B. and Richard Thomasson, Roanoke; one brother, Schuler Blackburn, Pearisburg. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, October 13, 1994, from the Lotz Vinton Chapel. The Rev. Ed West will officiate. Burial to follow in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Lotz Vinton Chapel.

BLAND, Dolly Mildred, 88, of Blacksburg, a servant of the Lord, went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, October 11, 1994, from the Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Bland, Sr.; her parents, Charlie and Annie Shaver; one infant daughter, Hazel Bland; a son, Sammy Bland; three sisters, a brother and a son-in-law, Lacy Lucas. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, James N. and Janet Bland, Roy and Delores Bland; two daughters and a son-in-law, Nellie Lucas, Ann and Dewey Lovern; three brothers; a special ex-grandson-in-law, Walter Thompson; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Chapel in Christiansburg, conducted by the Rev. Homer D. Sawyer, Rev. N. J. Underwood and Rev. Prince Hartley. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may call anytim e Wednesday at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home and the family will receive friends there from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

BLANKENSHIP, Clarice Vaughn, 79, of Narrows, died Sunday, October 9, 1994, in the Giles Memorial Hospital, Pearisburg, Va. as result of injuries received in a automobile accident that day. A lifelong resident of Giles County, she was born on August 9, 1915 and was the daughter of the late James William and Ada Virginia Whittaker Vaughn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Omie Blankenship. She was a member of the Church of Lord Jesus Christ, the Celco Sunshine Club and the Narrows Chapter of the AARP. She is survived by a son, William Harold Blankenship, Garland, Texas; a brother, Clarence J. Vaughn, Narrows; sisters, Frances V. Atwood, Pauline C. Blankenship, Lelia V, Meadows, all of Narrows; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Riffe's Funeral Chapel in Narrows with the Rev. Paul Terry and the Rev. Mike Hazlewood officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Narrows. The family will receive friends at Riffe's in Narrows, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

BOLT, French Edward Sr., 84, of Hillsville, passed away Sunday, October 9, 1994, at his home. He was born July 29, 1910. Surviving are his wife, Amy Jackson Boyer Bolt; one son, French Edward Bolt Jr., Gastonia, N.C.; one sister, Clara Mae Quesenberry, Kingsport, Tenn.; one brother, Harold Bolt, Pulaski; two grandsons, French Edward Bolt III, Chadwick Boyer Bolt. CUNNINGHAM, Rosalie Berger, 76, of 1321 Grace Ave., Clifton Forge, died Tuesday, October 11, 1994, at the Alleghany Regional Hospital. She was born in Clifton Forge on April 4, 1918, the daughter of the late Lewis Berger and Edna Bowers Cantrell. She was a retired salesperson for H. R. Rooklin Co. and a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ. She is survived by her husband, Claude Melton Cunningham, Clifton Forge; a son and daughter-in-law, Cary Michael and Shirley Cunningham, Roanoke; three sisters, Mrs. Marion Wrenn and Mrs. Joann Saunders, both of Clifton Forge, Mrs. Sylvia Montgomery, Richmond; two brothers, James A. Cantrell and William S. Cantrell, both of Clifton Forge; three grandchildren, Aaron Cunningham, Chicago, I ll., Christine and Catharine Galko, both of Roanoke; a number of nieces and nephews. DICKERSON, Mildred Cadd, 72, of Salem, died Monday, October 10, 1994. She was a member of the Elliston Church of God. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Melvin and Jenny Dickerson, Salem, Linda and George Pugh, Roanoke, Ted and Sherry Dickerson, Salem, Tony and Tracy Dickerson, Salem, Roger and Emma Dickerson, Elliston, Barbara and Charles Thomas, Shawsville, Penny and Daniel Goad, Salem; 21 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Jim Cadd, Roanoke. EDWARDS, Dewey S., 96, of Eldercare of Franklin Co., died Monday, October 10, 1994. She was the widow of Willie Claude Edwards. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Reva and Edward Goode, Deniece and Paul Burnette, all of Rocky Mount; one grandson and his wife, Wes and Melanie Burnette, Roanoke; two granddaughters, Sheree Whitlock, Rustburg, Lisa Whitlock, Ferrum; one great-grandchild, Matthew Mason Burnette, Roanoke; two sisters, Lillian S. HAMLETT, Douglas Earl Jr., 71, of Pearisburg, died Monday, October 10, 1994 in the Lawnwood Medical Center, Fort Pierce, Florida. Mr. Hamlett had been a bookkeeper and superintendent for fifteen years for the Virginia Limestone Corp. He was the owner of the D. E. Hamlett Trucking Co. He was a former member of the Pearisburg First United Methodist Church, but transferred his membership to the Lakewood Park United Methodist Church in Fort Pierce, Florida. He was born in Bluefield, W. Va. on January 4, 1923, a son of the late Douglas E. and Minnie Ruth Johnston Hamlett. He is survived by his wife, Grace Hamrick Hamlett, Fort Pierce, Fla.; one daughter, Deborah H . Lunnie, Roanoke; one brother, Dr. Luther J. Hamlett, Black Butt Ranch, Ore.; one granddaughter, Angela Renee Lunnie, Charlottesville; and one grandson, Adam Douglas Lunnie, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, October 14, 1994 at 2 p.m. in the Givens Funeral Chapel, Pearisburg, Va., with private interment to follow. PETERSON, Frances Carlyle, 71, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed away, at her home, Monday, October 10, 1994. Mrs. Peterson was born in Radford, Va. and moved to the area in 1972 from Navarre, Fla. Mrs. Peterson is survived by her husband, Moton H. ``Pete"" Peterson Sr., Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; son, Moton H. Peterson Jr., Atlanta, Ga.; daughter, Elizabeth A. (Mrs. Kenneth) Mosley, Niceville, Fla.; two brothers, William K. Anderson, Brewton, Al. and Karl K. Anderson, Roanoke; two grandchildren, Kim M. Thompson and Laura E. SURMONTE, Hugo N., 86, of Spring Lake, New Jersey, as well as Pompano Beach, Florida, died October 10, 1994. He was born March 25, 1908 in Newark, New Jersey, the son of Gonzalves and Ermalinda Surmonte. He was married to Marie Georgia Surmonte. He was a member of Saint Catherine's and Saint Margaret's Catholic Churches in Spring Lake, New Jersey. In addition, to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Dolores Kostelni of Lexington, Virginia, and Patricia S. Tischio of Norwalk, Connecticut; ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Surmonte was the founder, Chairman of the Board and Treasurer of Georgia Bonded Fibers, Inc., Newark, New Jersey, as well as Bontex SA, Stembert, Belgium; Bontex Italia s.r.l., Villafranca, Italy; and Bontex de Mexico, Leon, Mexico. A life long native son of New Jersey and a graduate of Barringer High School, Mr. Surmonte's illustrative business career dated back to 1933, when he launched a leather-finishing firm, Georgia Leather Company, in Newark, New Jersey, on a mere twenty-eight dollars borrowed from his wife, Marie Georgia Surmonte. Today Georgia Bonded Fibers/Bontex is a global company traded publically over NASDAQ, which has developed into a dynamic business, and is considered one of the primary sources of elastomeric nonwoven products supplied to the footwear, luggage, leathergoods, headwear, and allied industries. Bontex has manufacturing facilities in Buena Vista, Virginia; Stembert, Belgium; and Villafranca, Italy. Mr. Surmonte's credo of ``God-given willingness and honesty'' enable him to build a successful business. Active with the Newark Chamber of Commerce, New Jersey Institute of Technology, the Rosary Society of Spring Lake, and past Chairman of the Luggage and Leathergoods Manufacturers Association, he had been honored by numerous community

TOLLEY, Ralph Addison, 80, of Route 1, Box 127 (Alum Spring Road), Pulaski, died Monday, October 10, 1994, at his home. He was born in Radford, Va. on May 25, 1914, and he was the son of the late E.A. Tolley and Della Richards Tolley. Mr. Tolley was a retired Pulaski County farmer. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Pulaski. He was a member of Thornspring Ruritan Club. Surviving are his wife, Ruby Tolley, Pulaski; one son, Jack Tolley, Pulaski; one daughter, Joby Tolley Meade, Hilton Head, S.C.; one niece, Janice Wright, Danville; two grandchildren, Mike Tolley, Fairlawn, Michelle Tolley Hardin, Roanoke; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Frances Morehead, No rfolk, Va.; two brothers, J.E. UMBERGER, Nell Moore, 90, of 835 N. 12th St, Wytheville, died Monday, October 10, 1994, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was a retired school teacher who taught for 34 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan W. Umberger. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Jerry Cobb of Hampton, Va.; two grandchildren, Terri L. Cobb and Michael B. Cobb. Funeral service will be Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church conducted by Pastor Roger Kluttz, with the interment in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
