PULASKI, RADFORD FIRES UNDER INVESTIGATION

Pulaski and Radford authorities both are investigating suspicious fires that occurred Monday morning.

In Radford, Fire Marshal Cabby Whitt is investigating a suspicious fire at 515 Norwood St., the house beside the Jenkins and Jenkins law firm. The house is owned by Monroe W. Turner of Pulaski, but has not been lived in since 1988, Whitt said.

City firefighters went to the home about 3:30 a.m. Monday. The fire started in the upstairs bedroom, burning a mattress and a bedroom wall and causing about $2,000 in damage.

Whitt said there was evidence that the house had been forcibly entered through an upstairs door.

In Pulaski, firefighters saw flames showing from Woody's Restaurant at 1211 Lee Highway about 4 a.m., Fire Chief Jeff Hall said. The building was a total loss, with damage estimated at $68,000. The Pulaski Police Department is investigating, Hall said; and he declined to comment on where the fire started.

Firefighters saw the flames when they were returning from an unrelated furnace fire at the home of Mason Vaughan Sr., a county supervisor.

Vaughan's Pleasant Hill Drive home had heavy smoke but was not damaged, Hall said. Firefighters were called to the home about 3 a.m. A defective furnace motor is believed to be the cause.
