Smokey's 50th birthday observed

FAIRLAWN - The Fairlawn Volunteer Fire Department planted a tree at its station Friday to mark Smokey Bear's 50th birthday.

Fire Chief Bud Trigg said the tree-planting ceremony was attended by firefighters and David Cooper, the state Foresty Service's local forest warden.

The tree was one of three Cooper had received from the Virginia Department of Forestry. A plaque noting Smokey's birthday will be installed near the tree, Trigg said.
