THOMAS COULD RETURN AGAINST PITT

Tailback Dwayne Thomas, Virginia Tech's leading rusher, could return from a three-game absence Saturday against Pittsburgh.

Tech coach Frank Beamer said Thomas was planning on practicing Monday, and if he could practice full-speed by Wednesday, he would start in the Big East Conference game 1 p.m. at Lane Stadium.

Last week, Tech trainer Eddie Ferrell said he thought Thomas would be ready for the Pitt game. Thomas, who has 351 yards rushing in four games, sprained an ankle against West Virginia Sept. 22.

Beamer said freshman Ken Oxendine, who has started in Thomas' place, will miss some practice this week with a sore back.
