PARENT-CHILD FORUM FEATURES ODU PROFESSOR

Katharine C. Kersey, author, columnist and professor of early-childhood education at Old Dominion University, will be the keynote speaker next week at the 43rd annual Parent-Child Seminar, sponsored by the Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley.

The seminar will be held Monday and Tuesday at the Salem Civic Center. Kersey will deliver two keynote addresses. The first, on Monday, is titled "The Parent's Challenge in Today's World." She lectures Tuesday on "Changing Times, Changing Families."

Kersey is chairwoman of ODU's Department of Child Study Special Education. She has written three books: "The Art of Sensitive Parenting," "Helping Your Child Handle Stress" and "Don't Take It Out On Your Kids."

Kersey wrote a weekly syndicated column, "Raising Children, and Parents, Too," which appeared for 12 years in newspapers, including the Roanoke Times & World-News. She has appeared on ``Oprah'' and several other national talk shows.

Seminar registration on Monday will be at 6:30 p.m. Kersey's address, which is free of charge, follows at 7. Registration Tuesday will be at 8:30 a.m. Kersey's address follows at 9. Workshops will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2:30 p.m.

There is a $7 admission fee for the Tuesday keynote address and a $7-per-session fee for the workshops.
