AUTO WORKERS REJECT DEERE PACT

United Auto Workers reported to work on schedule Monday, a day after they overwhelmingly rejected a contract proposal from Deere & Co. that sharply reduced pay and benefits for new employees.

Production lines were running normally at Deere's East Moline plant, and a spokesman said the same was true companywide.

Union leaders said they were ready to resume talks, and the company said it would ``if such discussions would be productive.''

The UAW said Deere's proposal was rejected Sunday by more than 90 percent of its workers. UAW spokesman Karl Mantyla would not give specific numbers.
