SHAWVER'S SHOT POWERS COVINGTON OVER KNIGHTS

Nancy Shawver hit a short jumper with 20 seconds to play to give Covington the lead, and Jo Ann Helton hit a pair of free throws with 9 seconds remaining to ice the Cougars' 45-43 Pioneer District victory over James River Tuesday night.

Amy Sprinkle hit a jump shot to pull James River (3-11, 2-5) within a bucket with 2.5 seconds left.

Bessie Laws scored 16 points, and Helton added 10 for Covington (6-2, 11-4). Angie Johnson led the Knights with 15, Sprinkle had 11.

Rockbridge County 32

LEXINGTON - The Wildcats stayed close for a half but couldn't stop the Cavaliers' transition game in the second half. Sarah Moore scored 11 points in the third quarter, as Lord Botetourt (10-5, 3-2) outscored Rockbridge County (0-15, 0-5) 29-3 to take control.

Four Cavaliers scored in double figures, led by Moore's 21.

BUENA VISTA - The Highlanders pressed the Fighting Blues from the start and never were threatened in a surprisingly one-sided Pioneer District game.

Toree Morris canned three 3-pointers in scoring her game-high 20 points for Glenvar (13-2, 8-0). Marilea Hale and Erika Hale scored 11 each. Chrystal Humphries scored 17 points for Parry McCluer (11-3, 5-3).

Salem 53

Alleghany 37

Freshman Sarah Palmer scored 14 of her game-high 19 points in the first half, including nine in the first quarter to help Salem run past Alleghany at home and remain undefeated in the Blue Ridge District.

Salem (12-4, 5-0) jumped out to a 37-10 halftime lead and never looked back.
