EAGLES FLY PAST COLONELS

John Muse and Brandon Smith combined for 269 yards rushing and four touchdowns as the Franklin County defeated William Fleming 38-26 at Victory Stadium Friday night for its first Roanoke Valley District high school football win.

Muse had scoring runs of 40 and 50 yards and Smith had touchdown runs of 35 and 43 yards.

The Eagles (2-7, 0-3) scored on their first five posessions and jumped out to a 31-18 halftime lead.

Daniel Gunn scored the last of his four touchdowns for the Colonels (1-7, 0-2) on a 30-yard run with 10 minutes, 2 seconds left in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 31-26 but Smith's 43-yard run sealed the win for Franklin County.

Gunn amassed 200 yards on 26 times for William Fleming, which never punted.

Muse led the ground game for the Eagles with 23 carries for 170 yards and Smith had 12 carries for 99 yards.

Covington 19

James River 10

BUCHANAN - Tom Luckett scored two of his three touchdowns in the final 4:16 of the first half to give the Cougars the lead for good in their Pioneer District victory.

Luckett gained 218 yards on 30 carries for Covington (4-5, 3-1).

James River is 2-7, 0-4., scored on a 3-yard run to cut the score to 7-6 after the extra-point kick was blocked. After the kickoff, James River (2-7, 0-4) fumbled when Mark Whiting was hit after an 11-yard pickup.

Covington (4-5, 3-1) traveled 34 yards in 90 seconds to take a 12-7 lead on Luckett's 1-yard run.

James River's Michael Broughman made it 12-10 with a 27-yard field goal in the third quarter, but Covington sealed it with Luckett's 6-yard touchdown run with seven minutes remaining.

Whiting finished with 134 yards.

Glenvar 32

Shawsville 6

SHAWSVILLE - Junior quarterback Corey Willis ran for one touchdown and passed for another to lead the Highlanders to a non-district victory over the Shawnees.

Willis scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter, then opened the second with his only completion of the night, a 24-yarder to Joey Taylor for a touchdown.

Eric East led the ground game for Glenvar (5-4) with 94 yards on 19 carries. The Highlanders had 213 yards rushing while limiting Shawsville (1-8) to 46.

Lynwood Twine gave Glenvar a 20-0 lead heading into halftime when he scored on a 5-yard run. Senior kicker-fullback Brian Eads made it 26-0 with a 5-yard touchdown run.

Shawsville got its only score in the fourth quarter, when quarterback Chris Graham completed a 3-yard pass in the end zone to Cory Dow. Graham completed 14 of 25 passes for 79 yards.

Rustburg 47

Liberty 20

RUSTBURG - Sean Lynch completed two passes - both for touchdowns - and ran for two more touchdowns as the Devils scorched the Minutemen in a Seminole District game.

Tyrone Scott rushed for 171 yards on 21 carries and was the recipient of Lynch's first scoring pass, an 11-yarder. Kevin Tune added 125 yards rushing on 12 carries as Rustburg racked up 338 yards on the ground.

Lynch scored twice more in the first half, both on 1-yard runs, to put Rustburg (8-1, 8-1) up 20-14 at halftime. Liberty (5-4, 5-4) posted 14 points in the second quarter on a 6-yard run by J.J. Coles and a 22-yard pass from Mike Padgett to Chris Ridgeway.

Padgett completed nine passes for 127 yards in the first half, but was virtually shut down by the Devils in the second. Padgett connected on just two attempts for 30 yards, but one was on a 21-yarder to Greg Reynolds that tied the score at 20-20.

After that it was all Rustburg as the Devils scored 27 unanswered points. Scott tacked on two more touchdowns on runs of 3 and 13 yards, while Chris Lacks scored on a 2-yard run. Lynch completed his other pass to Chip Paige for a 52-yard score.

Rockbridge County 34

William Byrd 13

LEXINGTON - The Wildcats wore down the Terriers physically, and William Byrd (4-5, 1-4) never could get the ball moving, as Rockbridge County (4-5, 3-2) rolled to its third Blue Ridge District victory.

Greg Stubblefield led the Wildcats' charge, throwing two touchdown passes in the opening half. Stubblefield tossed the a 61-yard pass to Will Shepard in the first quarter and a 13-yard pass to Clyde Moyer in the second.

Gary Tyree rushed 18 times for 192 yards, including two touchdown runs of 41 and 58 yards to aid Rockbridge County.

Frank English tossed two touchdown passes for William Byrd. The first, a 65-yarder to Michael English in the second quarter, pulled the Terriers to within a touchdown. The second was a 9-yard strike to Jamie Fuqua in the fourth quarter.

William Campbell 54

Staunton River 8

NARUNA - William Brown scored four touchdowns and rushed for 163 yards to lead the Generals(7-2, 7-2) to 373 yards on the ground in a Seminole District blowout.

Brown scored on runs of 6, 7 and 45 yards and caught a 64-yard touchdown pass from Dominique Dews.

William Campbell (7-2, 7-2) led 42-0 in the third quarter before.

Jeff English caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Danny Thomas to put Staunton River (2-7, 2-7) on the board.

The Golden Eagles notched just three first downs and leading rusher Kevin Martin, who was averaging 108 yards per game, was held to three yards on 10 carries.
