BASSETT PULLS AWAY FOR 2ND-HALF VICTORY

Kim Hairston scored 22 of her game-high 33 points in the second half Wednesday to help overcome a slow start by Bassett as the Bengals rolled past Laurel Park 71-45 in the quarterfinal round of the Piedmont District tournament.

Bassett (17-4) led by three points at halftime, but pressure defense enabled the Bengals to get easy transition baskets as they outscored the Lancers 26-11 in the third quarter.

Hairston scored 12 in the third quarter and Lynetta Johnson added eight of her 12 in the quarter to help Bassett open the lead.

Laurel Park was led by Toy Perkins, who scored 18 points. Brandy Martin added 10.

The Bengals, who will play Fieldale-Collinsville in a semifinal tonight, also got 15 points from Heather Burke.
