BRINTHA GIBSON, Salem, has been named Woman of the Year by the Salem Charter Chapter of the American Business Women's Association. Gibson owns Classic Tours.

The award is given annually and is based on achievements in the field, education, community activities and participation in the association. Gibson has been a member in the association since 1985 and is on the Ways and Means Committee.

WANDA P. SEARS, personal financial planner with IDS Financial Services, was recently featured in the company's national magazine, Field Digest.

The story on Sears told of her success in client service and satisfaction and of being named the No. 1 planner in the nation among 7,000 competitors.

EDNA B. BROOKS , Roanoke, recently became a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She is a staff accountant with Moore & Campbell, P.C., in Roanoke. She is a graduate of the State University of New York at Albany and attended Virginia Western Community College and Roanoke College.

JUDY SHAFFER, Bridgewater Corners, Vt., has been promoted to audit senior at Smith, Batchelder & Rugg a certified public accountant and management consulting firm with offices in New Hampshire.

Shaffer, daughter of Harold and Jerry Shaffer of Roanoke, graduated from Roanoke College in Salem.

HOLLINS COLLEGE recently received a fund-raising excellence award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Hollins is one of 21 private liberal arts colleges in the country named to the 1994 Circle of Excellence in Educational Fund Raising. Hollins was selected for overall fund-raising improvement based on the judges' analysis of data submitted to the Council for Aid to Education for its 1993 "Survey of Voluntary Support of Education." Gifts to the college in 1993 increased by 25 percent over 1992 and surpassed $4.5 million.

ENGINEERING DESIGN SYSTEMS, INC. has been named one of the top 10 AutoCAD dealers in the country by Autodesk Inc. the world's sixth largest software manufacturer.

Engineering Design Systems Inc. sells hardware and software for use in manufacturing, engineering and architectural design professions. It has customers in Southwest Virginia, and West Virginia.

SUSANNAH FRANCIS of Raleigh Court Health Care Center in Roanoke has earned certification as an Activity Director Certified from the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals.

Activity professionals develop and lead activity programming in nursing homes, senior centers, retirement housing and adult day care.

CURTIS CARTER, executive chef at Hunting Hills Country Club, has been inducted into the American Academy of Chefs, a subsidiary of the American Culinary Federation and an honor society of chefs. Carter has been involved with the federation for 16 years and is vice president and certification chairman of the Roanoke Valley chapter of the federation. He has worked at Hunting Hills for 15 years.

WANDA Z. DUNNIGAN and LORA S. LAMPHEY, employees of Lemons' Jewelry Inc., recently received diamond certificates after attending a two-day diamond seminar.

Dunnigan is a sales consultant, and Lamphey is an assistant manager.

DR. EDWARD A. WORKMAN, a Roanoke neuropsychiatrist, has been elected to fellow status in the American Academy of Pain Medicine.

AAPM is a national physician organization that studies the sources and treatments of pain. Workman is the first physician in Southwest Virginia to attain fellow status in the organization.

ELAINE VAUGHN, owner of Love Baskets Ltd., recently returned from Holiday Jubilee in Washington D.C., where she was selected by Gift Basket Review Magazine to be an assistant teacher on a class, "Holiday Orders for Your Corporate Clients."

NEW YORK LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY has announced that four agents in the Roanoke Valley have been qualified for its 1994 Executive Council. They are: Henry B. Monsour, F. Courtney Hoge, J. Len Hale and Janet Whitfield. Council membership is based on 1993-94 sales performance.

STEPHEN GEORGE FRANKLIN, son of George and Berna Franklin of Roanoke, has been promoted to DC-8 captain as a member of the United Parcel Service airline crew.

Franklin began his career with UPS in March 1988. The 1975 Northside High School graduate also graduated from the Air Force Academy.

WANDA BEARD of Roanoke, was honored at Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield in Roanoke for selling 12,700 individual policies over the phone. Beard was the company's top salesperson for 25 consecutive quarters.

In her honor, the company held "Wanda Beard Day." Only five other salespeople have come close to Beard's mark, each having sold about 8,000 policies.

Beard has worked at Trigon for six years and is a charter member of the 10K club, which recognizes telemarketers who have sold 10,000 policies.

RICHARD A. MELK and DWAYNE TROTTMAN, workers at the Chick-fil-A at Tanglewood Mall, have earned $1,000 scholarships from the company's Team Member Scholarship Program. Students must work at least 20 hours per week for two years and be recommended by a supervisor to earn a scholarship.

WYN YUHAS of Salem was honored with a commendation from the State Adopt-A-Highway program. The award recognizes Yuhas' work in organizing the program in Roanoke, Botetourt and Craig counties.

Yuhas has worked three years as an office services specialist for the Virginia Department of Transportation in the Salem Residency Office. More than 335 miles of road in Yuhas' area have been adopted by 160 groups and individuals.

MUTUAL OF NEW YORK has announced its 1993-94 Honor Club qualifiers. They are Chris Caveness, Frank Foley and Tony Mullins. The club recognizes sales performance and client service.

THE ROANOKE VALLEY LEGAL SECRETARIES ASSOCIATION recently named Judge Jack Coulter, retired judge of the 23th Circuit Court of Virginia, as its boss of the year.

The group's member of the year is Betty C. Moorman, a legal secretary with Coulter & Coulter in Roanoke and past president of the association.

SUSIE KINGERY of Roanoke has received the Spirit of Longaberger award, the highest level of national recognition within the Longaberger Co.

Kingery is an independent consultant for the company, volunteers with the hearing impaired, translating church services and other church-related meetings, and does other community service work.

LINDA R. McMILLAN of Troutville recently received two awards at the Young Bankers Conference in Reston. McMillan, an employee in the Daleville office of the Bank of Buchanan, gave the greatest number of Personal Economics Program presentations in the state and also received the state award for making the most individual student contacts. She made 71 presentations to 3,768 students.

STEVE McGRAW Roanoke County Circuit Court clerk, has been designated a certified Circuit Court clerk. The accreditation program is given by the University of Virginia's Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service and Division of Continuing Education.

JEANETTE C. WEBBER has been named office manager at Mount Regis Center in Salem. She will be responsible for human resource development and personnel policies and procedures and will also oversee support activities at the chemical dependency treatment center.

Webb has formerly held administrative assistant and personnel positions with Hall, Vogler & Flemming and Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley.

She is a member of the Roanoke Valley Society for Human Resource Management.

DANIEL H. FENDLEY and TIMOTHY L. BARNETT have been name vice presidents at Martin Bros. Contractors Inc. in Roanoke.

Fendley is a graduate of Virginia Tech and is vice president of project management.

Barnett is a graduate of the University of Tennessee and is vice president of estimating.

WAYNE THOMPSON, a public relations specialist in the Office of Public Relations and Marketing at Bowman Gray/Baptist Hospital Medical Center, won first place for Best Feature Story and third place for Best Personality Profile for articles in VISIONS, the Medical Center's quarterly magazine.

Thompson, son of James V. and the late Barbara Thompson of Roanoke, has worked at the center since 1990.

MARTHA HIGGS and CHARLENE McCADDEN, both registered nurses and infection control practitioners at the Salem Veterans Affairs Center in Salem, have received awards for developing innovative in-service educational programs and successful quality assurance studies. The awards were presented by the Virginia Chapter of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology at its 20th educational conference.

WYN YUHAS of Salem has received the 1994 Dare to Care Outstanding Supporter Award for her work in promoting the Adopt-a-Highway program, sponsored by the Virginia Department of Transportation. Yuhas, an office services specialist in VDOT's Salem office, coordinates Adopt-a-Highway volunteers in Roanoke, Botetourt and Craig counties. She was one of 10 groups or individuals receiving the award.
