W&L OPENS TOURNAMENT WITH WIN

Cam Dyer scored a career-high 29 points to lead Washington and Lee to an 85-72 victory over Amherst in the opening round of the Washington and Lee Tip-Off Tournament in Lexington.

The Generals (1-0) will meet Tufts College, a 89-88 winner over Geneseo State in overtime, in the championship game today at 4 p.m.

The Generals took a 48-43 halftime lead over the Lord Jeffs (0-1) and held them to 26 percent shooting in the second half. Amherst made only nine of 35 shots in the second half and connected on just three of 19 3-point attempts for the game.

Dyer, a junior forward, made nine of 14 shots and hit 11 of his 15 free-throw attempts. Mark Connelly added 16 points and Chris Couzen chipped in 11.

In other college basketball:

Hampden-Sydney 72, Greensboro 66: In Hampden-Sydney, Nate Schwab scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Tigers (2-0) past the Pride in the final of the Wal-Mart Classic.

Schwab scored 15 points in the second half for Hampden-Sydney, making seven of 10 field-goal attempts.

Memphis 94, San Francisco 82: At Memphis, Tenn., David Vaughn had 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Tigers advanced to the semifinals of the Preseason NIT.

Memphis (2-0) faces New Mexico State on Wednesday at New York's Madison Square Garden. George Washington plays Ohio University in the other semifinal, with the winners playing Friday night.

Memphis led 55-36 at the break. San Francisco (1-1), led by John Duggan's 26 points, staged a 10-point run to cut the Tigers' lead to 57-46 with 17:22 to play.

Over the next 6 minutes, the Dons cut away at the lead, finally closing to 67-65. But Memphis began pulling away again, with Mingo Johnson cashing in on three 3-pointers in a little over 2 minutes. Johnson hit 5-of-8 for the game and scored 18 points.

Women

Roanoke 88, Greensboro 59: At Arlington, the Maroons used a fullcourt press to force 18 turnovers which led to easy baskets and a lopsided victory over Greensboro College in the second round of the Marymount Tipoff Classic.

The Maroons (1-1) will play Christopher Newport today for fourth place in the tournament.

Roanoke College got balance scoring as four players scored in double figures. Former Blacksburg High star Suzanne Moore led the Maroons with 16 points and William Byrd alum Marcee Hufton chipped in 15, including four 3-pointers.

Ali Maulkin contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds and Crystal Wilson added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Greensboro College (0-2) was led by Jamie Garrett, who scored 15 points.

Ferrum 76, Mary Washington 72: At Ferrum, Kia Williams scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Panthers past Mary Washington in the championship game of the Ferrum Tip-Off Tournament.

Glossary Smith added 17 points and Latasha Randon chipped in 11 for the Panthers (2-0) who have won their two games by a combined margin of six points.

Mary Washington (1-1) got 17 points each from Stephanie Teter and Robin Coates.

Smith was chosen the tournament's most valuable player. Kia Williams from Ferrum and Teter also made the all-tournament team.

Wesleyan 56, Hollins 52: At Sewanee, Tenn., Hollins made just 11 of 26 free throws in losing its season opener. Sarah Kirby led Hollins with 18 points and nine rebounds. Laura Neff scored 15 for Wesleyan (1-0).
