RELIGION BRIEFS

Advent, the period of four weeks before Christmas, begins Sunday. It is observed in many churches as a time of preparation for the coming of Christ. The word from the Latin "coming" refers both to the birth of Jesus and the "second coming" of him in glory. Customs surrounding the period include the making of wreaths with four candles to mark each week and the presentation of seasonal music and plays - traditional and contemporary - to refresh worshipers for a new church year.

A THANKSGIVING DINNER, free for anyone who would otherwise eat it alone, will be served today at noon at Salem Presbyterian Church in downtown Salem. Reservations are not essential. The meal is offered as a service to the community as a sharing of church hospitality. It will be served in the fellowship hall on North Market Street.

THE COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM, a joint United Methodist ministry to inner-city children, will be part of the Photo USA Santa Giving Program this year. Parents who have their children photographed with Santa Claus at Valley View and Tanglewood shopping malls may designate a $1 donation for the program, which is operated out of Trinity Church in Old Southwest.

FOUR NEIGHBORHOOD MEMORIAL SERVICES, intended especially for families of those who have died during 1994, are scheduled during the pre-Christmas season under sponsorship of Oakey's Funeral Service of Roanoke. All will begin at 3 p.m. and are open to the public. Receptions follow each.

The dates, places and worship leaders are: Saturday, with the Rev. David Yingling at Central Church of the Brethren, 416 Church Ave. S.W.; Sunday with the Rev. Philip Motley at Grandin Court Baptist, 2660 Brambleton Ave. S.W.; Dec. 10, with the Rev. Troy B. Webb at Glad Tidings Assembly of God, 7422 Deer Branch Road, Hollins; and Dec. 11, with the Rev. Dr. William L. Ross at Vinton Baptist Church, Washington Avenue in downtown Vinton.

GOOD SAMARITAN HOSPICE, a ministry to the terminally ill and their families, will sponsor its annual memorial service Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at Colonial Avenue Baptist Church, 4165 Colonial Ave. S.W. The service is especially for people who have lost loved ones during recent years and will include a time of sharing pictures and memories.

The hospice also will sponsor a seminar for the bereaved, "Coping with the Holidays," on On Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m. Susan Highfill, director of counseling for the hospice, will lead the seminar that will be held at the hospice's office at 3825 Electric Road S.W.

NORTHMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH will begin a community outreach program on Jan.5. The Thursday afternoon programs, from 3 to 5, will be for third-graders from the nearby Huff Lane School. the programs include activities for recreation, tutoring and strengthening life skills.

The Rev.Dr. David Kirk, pastor, said the new project is the result of a study and fund-raising drive by church members to develop a needed ministry to the neighborhood. Valeria Brewer, a Northminster member, will be director.

GARY FULSEBAKKE, a graduate of Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary and a soloist in many Roanoke sacred music programs, will perform gospel works Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Mill Creek Baptist Church on U.S. 11, north of Troutville.

THE GARTH NEWELL CHAMBER MUSIC PLAYERS of Bath County will perform Sunday at 3 p.m. at Fincastle Presbyterian Church on Back Street. An offering will be taken for the Botetourt Fuel Assistance Program through which church members and others assist clients of the Botetourt County Department of Social Services.

A reception will follow the performance.

THE REV. HAROLD PENNICK will conclude his pastorate at Mill Creek Baptist Church at the end of the year. Pennick began his work at the Botetourt church in April. He has not announced his plans.

THE REV. BRAD BRAXTON, a former Salemite now in Atlanta, will preach for the Men's Day service Sunday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 310 N. Jefferson St.

At 4:30 p.m., a service of thanksgiving for payment of the church mortgage is scheduled. Guest speaker then will be the Rev. Roscoe D. Cooper Jr. of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Richmond.

THE REV. CAROL JOHNSTON, minister of visitation at Grandin Court Baptist Church, will leave the staff at the end of the year. Johnston, who said she will devote her time to family and other areas of ministry, has assisted with the ministry of the church for nearly 20 years.

CAVE SPRING BAPTIST CHURCH, 4873 Brambleton Ave. S.W., has scheduled a Christmas preparatory celebration, "Gloria," for Dec. 2,3 and 4, nightly at 7.

There is no charge but tickets are needed to assure a seat. Tickets may be obtained by calling 989-6136. The program includes music by choral and bell groups as well as a seasonal story.

JERUSALEM BAPTIST CHURCH plans a musical program Sunday at 4 p.m. to mark the 11th anniversary of Usher Board No.2. The Voices of Inspiration, a gospel group, will perform at the church at 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W.

THE REV. RONNIE NORRIS has resigned from the staff of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Norris has for more than three years been associate pastor for youth and children's ministry. He has not announced his plans.

BELMONT CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 1101 Jamison Ave. S.E., will sponsor its Hanging of the Greens service on Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. Members of the Disciples of Christ congregation annually observe the beginning of the Advent season with the program of unusual carols and narration about their significance and that of the decorations.

A nursery will be available for the free program and reception.

AN ECKANKAR BOOK DISCUSSION will take place Tuesday night at 8 at 2400 Gate House Lane in Salem. For more information about the teachings of the "religion of the sight and sound of God," call 389-8043.

THE REV. C.M. "BUDDY" ASHTON, minister of education and youth at Fort Lewis Baptist Church, has resigned from the staff after a two-year ministry. He has not announced his plans.
