TOBACCO SPILLS ON EXPRESSWAY

Traffic was slowed on the Roy L. Webber Highway for several hours Thursday morning as workers cleared bales of tobacco strewn on the roadway from a tractor-trailer accident. The vehicle overturnedabout 11:22 p.m. Wednesday near the Colonial Avenue exit.

Roanoke police said the truck driver, William R. Betts of Danville, had fallen asleep at the wheel. His truck overturned and rolled into the highway median. Betts sustained minor injuries. He was charged with failing to maintain proper control of his vehicle, police said.
