WKEX GOES COUNTRY FOR HOLIDAYS

14-K, WKEX (1430 AM), Blacksburg, is starting to phase some holiday tunes into its pop and country musical mix. But, instead of Bruce Springsteen's version of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," you're more likely to hear Gene Autry's. (For those too young to recall, Autry - now 87 - was the original singing cowboy who came in off the range and the movie set to become a broadcasting mogul and owner of baseball's California Angels.)

The late Nat King Cole's rendition of "The Christmas Song" (``Chestnuts roasting on an open fire ...'' ) is another possibility. Listeners are likely to hear other "chestnuts" in the holiday tradition by the likes of Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Chet Atkins, Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, Perry Como and even Lester Lanin and his band. But, sorry, nothing from "The Boss."

14-K spins two holiday songs each hour until Saturday. By Dec. 18, the station will be 100 percent in the Christmas and holiday spirit.

For those unwilling to brave the cold and the crowds, WTOB (Channel 2), Blacksburg public-government access television, offers live coverage of the 1994 Blacksburg Christmas Parade, "The Wonder of Christmas," today at 1 p.m. It'll also record the parade festivities for rebroadcast.
