KNIGHTS GIVE CARR 1ST WIN

Matt Matheny scored 24 points and Dusty Beekman added 18 as Cave Spring blew past Alleghany 80-66 on Friday night in a non-district game to give Chris Carr his first victory as the Knights' coach.

Cave Spring (1-0) struggled in the first half as the Mountaineers' press forced turnovers that led to numerous easy layups. Alleghany trailed by three at halftime, thanks mainly to Dusty Rowland, who scored 10 of his 15 points in the first two quarters.

Matheny, though, sparked a Knights run after halftime by scoring 11 of his 24 in the third quarter as Cave Spring outscored Alleghany 24-15 to take a 12-point lead into the fourth quarter.

James Hughes tried to rally the Mountaineers in the final period as the senior scored 13 of his game-high 25 in the period, but Alleghany could not catch up.

While the Knights had trouble shooting against the Mountaineers' matchup zone, Cave Spring did hit eight 3-pointers - Beekman nailed four.
