HISTORY COMPETITION SCHEDULED FOR E&H

A regional competition for National History Day will be held April 1 at Emory & Henry College. This year's theme will be ``Conflict and Compromise in History.''

Students winning first- or second-place prizes at the regional level are eligible for the state competition to be held May 13 at the University of Virginia. State winners advance to the national competition June 11-14 at the University of Maryland.

The regional competition for District 2, covering 12 counties in Southwest Virginia from Bland, Wythe and Grayson west to Lee, is co-sponsored by Emory & Henry and the Virginia Society of History Teachers.

Competition will be held in two student divisions, sixth through eighth grade and ninth through 12th grade. Each division has seven categories: individual paper and individual and group competitions for projects, performances or media presentations.

Students and classes interested in participating must complete a pre-registration form by March 20. Forms and other information are available by calling or writing event coordinator Eugene Rasor, a professor of history at the college; or event coordinators, John Roper, a professor of history, and Thomas Little, an assistant professor of history.
