HANCOCK LEADS FRANKLIN COUNTY PAST G.W.-DANVILLE

Franklin County jumped out to a 32-12 lead before G.W.-Danville pulled to 41-29 at halftime. The teams played evenly through the second half.

Jason Conklin scored 19 point for Franklin County (1-0) and Chad Foutz and Carlos Holland each added 13.

Bobby Wimbush scored 20 for G.W.-Danville (0-1) and Chris Reese chipped in 19.

POCHANTAS - Jeff Ross scored 17 points and Justin Lineberry added 12 as the Maroon Tide defeated the Indians in the season opener for both teams.

Pochantas (0-1) jumped out to a 24-12 lead in the first quarter but got into foul trouble in the second as Galax took a 35-29 halftime lead.

The Indians pulled to within one, 52-51 in the fourth quarter but the Maroon Tide stretched its lead for the win.

Chad Scarberry scored 17 points for Pochantas and Jason Roberts added 13.

Franklin County (2-0) led 19-15 at halftime and never trailed.

Natalie Giles scored 16 points and Betty Smith had 21 rebounds and nine points. Susie Wilson dished out eight assists.

Michelle Warner was the lone double digit scorer for G.W.-Danville (0-2). She had 15 points.

Floyd County 83, Fort Chiswell 76: In Fort Chiswell, the Buffaloes held off the Pioneers in a wild non-district opener.

Floyd County hit 17 of 21 field-goal attempts in the first half to take a big lead. Then Jody Burnett scored 13 of his game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter as Fort Chiswell, trailing by 26 points with 6 minutes, 30 seconds left, cut its deficit to five with two minutes remaining.

The Buffaloes were paced by Brian Harman with 20 points. Harman made 14 of 16 free throws in the second half. Freshman Jason Dalton had seven rebounds and two blocked shots for Floyd County.
