FOOTBALL COACH STEPS DOWN AT ALLEGHANY

Tom McIntyre has resigned as the football coach at Alleghany High School after five years at the Low Moor school.

McIntyre cited personal reasons for his resignation and refused to elaborate, except to say he will pursue other career opportunities - possibly in coaching. He will continue to teach at the school until he finds another position.

McIntyre's last three teams at Alleghany went 17-13, and his overall record at the school was 21-29. The Mountaineers' best record under McIntyre was in 1993, when they went 7-3. This year, Alleghany went 4-6.

In other sports in the region:

Milard Vining and Billy Ray Ellis swept the top football awards at the Ferrum sports banquet.

Vining was named offensive player of the year and Ellis won the defensive award. Also honored in football were Chris Glascock and Ray Brawley (Liberty High School), who shared the Big Green Award for courage, hustle and desire.

In volleyball, Tamiko Martin (Magna Vista) was named MVP, Teresa Sebra was the most improved player and Alyson Alamo won the Lady Panther award.

In men's soccer, the MVP for the second consecutive year was Stevie Reynolds (Franklin County), the offensive player of the year was Todd Stiles, the outstanding defender was Sal Fiorenza and the coaches' award was won by Billy Ball.

In women's soccer, Carrie Early won her third MVP award in as many years. Also honored were Shannon Sayre (defensive player of the year), Susan Sautter (offensive player of the year) and Kimmy McGee (coaches' award).

Virginia's Mike Fisher is one of 10 finalists for the Hermann Trophy, which honors college soccer's player of the year.

The sophomore midfielder has 15 goals and 13 assists in 24 games this season for the Cavaliers, who meet Rutgers in an NCAA Tournament semifinal Friday in Davidson, N.C. He has a chance to become the third UVa player to win the award, following in the footsteps of Tony Meola (1989) and Claudio Reyna (1993).

Other finalists for the award are: Todd Yeagley and Brian Maisonneuve, Indiana; Jason Kreis, Duke; Chris Faklaris and Rob Smith, South Carolina; Wolde Harris, Clemson; Staale Soebye, San Francisco; Matt McKeon, St.Louis; and Temoc Suarez, North Carolina. The field will paired to three players in early January, and the winner will receive the trophy Jan.12 at the coaches' convention in Washington, D.C.
