HANDLEY'S TWINS HEAD AA TEAM

The record-setting Partlow twins of Division 3 champion Handley lead The Associated Press All-Group AA football team announced Tuesday.

Brian Partlow, a 6-foot-4 quarterback who rewrote the state passing record book, was named the Group AA player of the year.

He and his brother, 6-4 wide receiver Michael Partlow, were among six Handley players named to the first or second units in voting by a panel of sportswriters from across the state.

Among the records Brian set this year was passing yardage (3,014), which helped Handley compile a 14-0 record. He threw for 38 touchdowns, was intercepted 10 times and rushed for 313 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Michael, a first-team selection for the second consecutive year, had 96 receptions this season for 1,835 yards and 25 touchdowns.

The three-team New River District was represented by three players on the first-team offense, with Christiansburg's Andra Beasley joining the Blacksburg duo of Shane Beamer and Tim Schnecker. Also from Timesland on the first team were George Seals of Magna Vista and Mike Murphy of Salem.

Beamer, the son of Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer, caught 55 passes for 668 yards.

Division 4 champion Spotsylvania has two first-team selections, including 6-7, 302-pound tackle Evan Hunt. He is joined by Seals, who was named to the first team for the second consecutive year.

Mark Brown of Amherst and Matoaca's Shannon Ward are the guards, and the center is Schnecker.

Andre Braxton of Caroline County is a first-team running back for the second year in a row. Braxton rushed for 1,844 yards and 20 touchdowns this year. He is joined in the backfield by Beasley and Alonzo Mathews of Amherst. Beasley rushed for 1,865 yards and 26 touchdowns, and Mathews had 1,383 rushing yards and 23 scores. Beasley also is the second-team kick-returner.

The first-team defensive line features Rustburg's Tyrone Scott, who moves up from the second team in 1993. Scott is joined by R.E. Lee-Staunton's Travis Griffith, Virginia High School's Octavius Hall, Southampton's Armazlo Smith and Handley's Andy Vipperman.

Gate City's Matt Johnson, the leading tackler on a team that had five shutouts, is joined at linebacker by Dillon Taylor of Spotswood and Cardell Winfield of Matoaca.

Spotsylvania's Anthony Bowie is joined in the backfield by Cornell Lewis of Matoaca and Donald Turner of Nansemond River.

The kicker is Chancellor's Patrick Walsh and the punter is T.C. Griffith of Osbourn. The return specialist is Salem's Mike Murphy.

The coach of the year is Patrick County's Addison Kendrick.

The second team features wide receiver Gregg Reynolds and quarterback Mike Padgett of Liberty, offensive tackle Jeff Painter of Northside, linebacker Clifford Wimbush of Bassett andpunter Michael Berry of William Byrd.
