BICYCLIST DIED OF EXPOSURE

The dead bicyclist found on a Stewartsville mountain Sunday has been identified as Jody Allen Carter, 28, of Roanoke.

Carter, who apparently fell from the top of a rocky ledge on Stewart Knob off Virginia 635 and became trapped in rocks below, died of exposure to cold temperatures, said Dr. William Massello, assistant deputy chief medical examiner for Western Virginia.

No foul play is suspected.

The autopsy was performed Tuesday by Dr. David Oxley, the deputy chief medical examiner. Oxley identified Carter, who wasn't carrying any identification, from fingerprints in a missing-persons file.

Carter was reported missing from his Roanoke home in mid-November.

Massello said Carter could have been on the mountain for days or weeks; the cold weather made it difficult to determine.

A group of men climbing the densely overgrown mountain to view the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway on Sunday found Carter's body after they spotted his blue mountain bike, which had a flat front tire.

Carter is a native of New Hampshire and had lived in the Roanoke area for about four years, according to a news release from Bedford County Sheriff Carl Wells.
