RELIGION BRIEFS

With Christmas on Sunday this year, many churches have canceled Sunday school programs and have scheduled one service of worship at 11 a.m.

VINTON BAPTIST CHURCH, Washington Street in downtown Vinton, will have Christmas Eve services at 4 p.m. for children and 7 p.m. with music by candlelight.

BELMONT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1005 Ninth St. S.E., will include the Lord's Supper by candlelight at its Christmas Eve worship at 10 p.m.

MOUNT PLEASANT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 3009 Mount Pleasant Blvd., will have a Christmas Eve service of lessons and carols at 10 p.m. A Christmas Day celebration for the community will be at 11 a.m.

ST. TIMOTHY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1201 Hardy Road, Vinton, will celebrate Communion by candlelight with special music at 11 p.m. Christmas Eve.

BETHANY CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 3115 Fleming Ave. N.W., presents its cantata, "More Than a Manger," tonight at 7. The Disciples of Christ congregation also will gather by candlelight on Christmas Eve at 5:30 p.m.

ST. JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, Elm and Jefferson in downtown Roanoke, is adding an 8 p.m. Christmas Eve service this year. As at 11 p.m., it will include Eucharist.

A children's pageant begins at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The late service is preceded by carol singing at 10:30. Christmas Day Communion will begin at 10 a.m.

TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4040 Williamson Road N.W., has scheduled a nativity tableau on the lawn tonight through Saturday. The Thursday and Friday night showings will be from 7 to 9. On Christmas Eve, the presentation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. and followed by a family service.

SALLY AHNER a former Roanoker, who is now a professor of voice at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., will be guest soloist for the Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m. at West End United Methodist Church. She will augment the music of the West End Choir for the Lessons and Carols service at the church on 13th Street at Campbell Avenue Southwest.

A NOON SERVICE on Christmas Eve is planned at Second Presbyterian Church, 214 Mountain Ave. S.W. A family service with the children's choirs will be at 5:30 p.m. and candlelight Communion will be at 11 p.m. The nursery will open at 5:30.
