RELIGION BRIEFS

With Christmas on Sunday this year, many churches have canceled Sunday school programs and have scheduled one service of worship at 11 a.m.

ST. JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, Elm and Jefferson in downtown Roanoke, is adding an 8 p.m. Christmas Eve service this year. As at 11 p.m., it will include Eucharist.

A children's pageant begins at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The late service is preceded by carol singing at 10:30. Christmas Day Communion will begin at 10 a.m.

ST. ELIZABETH'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 2339 Grandin Road S.W., will begin observance of Christmas with a pageant at 7 p.m. Saturday. At 10:30 p.m., carol singing will precede the 11 p.m. Eucharist. Christmas Day Communion will begin at 11 a.m. with retired Bishop William H. Marmion the celebrant.

On New Year's Eve, the church will sponsor a celebration starting at 9 p.m. It will include food, carol singing and Communion at 11:15.

The nursery will be staffed.

CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 1101 Franklin Road S.W., has scheduled a family service with pageant and Eucharist at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Nursery will be staffed.

The Holy Eucharist at 11 p.m. will be preceded by carol singing at 10:30. Christmas morning Eucharist at 11 a.m. will include carols.

CHRISTMAS EVE MASSES will take place at 5:30 p.m. for children; 7:30 p.m. for youth; and 9:30 p.m. for adults at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, 2505 Electric Road S.W. One Mass at 9 a.m. is planned for Christmas Day.

A CANDLELIGHT SERVICE for meditation on the meaning of Christmas is planned Saturday at 8 p.m. at Ghent Grace Brethren Church, 1511 Maiden Lane S.W.

ST. MARK'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1008 Franklin Road S.W., plans Christmas Communion services Saturday at 5 and 10:45 p.m. and on Christmas Day at 11 a.m.

CONNELLY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH, 3907 Hershberger Road N.W., will present a nativity tableau on its lawn tonight and Friday from 6:30 to 8:30. On Christmas Eve, the presentation from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. will be followed by candlelight Communion.

CHRISTMAS EVE WORSHIP at First Presbyterian Church will include a family service at 5 p.m. followed by special music at 10:40 p.m. and a candlelight service at 11 p.m. A "Feast of Carols" will be presented on Christmas Day at 10 a.m. The church is on South Jefferson at McClanahan streets.

CENTRAL CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN, 416 Church Ave. S.W., has scheduled Christmas Eve candlelight Communion at 4 and 11 p.m.

OAK GROVE CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN, 2138 McVitty Road S.W., will have a 6:30 p.m. Christmas Eve family service by candlelight.

ST. JOHN LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4608 Brambleton Ave. S.W., will have Christmas Eve worship at 7 and 11 p.m.

WEST END PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1200 Campbell Ave. S.W., has planned a 7:30 p.m. candlelight service on Christmas Eve.

WINDSOR HILLS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 3591 Windsor Road S.W., will have Christmas Eve services at 5 and 11 p.m. and a program of seasonal music at 10:30 p.m.

SALLY AHNER a former Roanoker, who is now a professor of voice at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., will be guest soloist for the Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m. at West End United Methodist Church. She will augment the music of the West End Choir for the Lessons and Carols service at the church on 13th Street at Campbell Avenue Southwest.

A NOON SERVICE on Christmas Eve is planned at Second Presbyterian Church, 214 Mountain Ave. S.W. A family service with the children's choirs will be at 5:30 p.m. and candlelight Communion will be at 11 p.m. The nursery will open at 5:30.

WESTHAMPTON CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 2515 Grandin Road S.W., will present a traditional candlelight service at 8 p.m. Christmas Eve. On Sunday, the only service at the Disciples of Christ congregation will be at 11 a.m.

BELMONT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1005 Ninth St. S.E., will include the Lord's Supper by candlelight at its Christmas Eve worship at 10 p.m.

MOUNT PLEASANT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 3009 Mount Pleasant Blvd., will have a Christmas Eve service of lessons and carols at 10 p.m. A Christmas Day celebration for the community will be at 11 a.m.
