RELIGION BRIEFS

With Christmas on Sunday this year, many churches have canceled Sunday school programs and scheduled one service of worship at 11 a.m.

SALEM WESLEYAN CHURCH, 424 Chamberlain Lane, will have the cantata, "Born a King," sung by the Sanctuary Choir at 11 a.m. Christmas Day. The cantata replaces the usual Sunday schedule. A special New Year's Communion is planned for Jan. 1 at 11 a.m.

SALEM PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, Main and Market Streets in downtown Salem, has scheduled a Christmas Eve family service at 5 p.m. with a children's pageant, "The Shepherd's Story," and special music. Communion by candlelight will be available at the 11 p.m. service, which is new at the church this year.

ST. PAUL'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, Main and Market Streets in downtown Salem, is planning music by its bell choir and children's choir for the 4:30 p.m. Christmas Eve service. The adult choir will sing at 10:30 p.m. Both services will include Communion. On Christmas Day, Communion will begin at 11 a.m.

COLLEGE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 210 College Ave. in Salem, has scheduled Christmas Eve Communion services at 7:30 and 11 p.m. Instrumental music of the season will begin at 10:50 p.m. A lessons and carols service will take place at 11 a.m. on Christmas Day.

FAITH EVANGELICAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, Eighth Street at Carolina Avenue in Salem, will have a 5 p.m. Christmas Eve service.

WEST SALEM BAPTIST CHURCH, 500 Turner Road in Salem, plans a Christmas Eve candlelight service for the family, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

ECKANKAR DISCUSSION, a book study for spiritual growth, will take place Tuesday at 8 p.m. at 2400 Gate House Lane in Salem. Call 389-8043 for more information.

CHRISTMAS EVE COMMUNION is planned Saturday at 10 p.m. at Ridgewood Baptist Church, 703 Hemlock Road N.W.

ST. ELIZABETH'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 2339 Grandin Road S.W., will begin observance of Christmas with a pageant at 7 p.m. Saturday. At 10:30 p.m., carol singing will precede the 11 p.m. Eucharist. Christmas Day Communion will begin at 11 a.m. with retired Bishop William H. Marmion as the celebrant.

On New Year's Eve, the church will sponsor a celebration starting at 9 p.m. It will include food, carol singing and Communion at 11:15.

The nursery will be staffed.

CHRISTMAS EVE MASSES will take place at 5:30 p.m. for children; 7:30 p.m. for youth; and 9:30 p.m. for adults at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, 2505 Electric Road S.W. One Mass at 9 a.m. is planned for Christmas Day.

CONNELLY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH, 3907 Hershberger Road N.W., will present a nativity tableau on its lawn tonight and Friday from 6:30 to 8:30. On Christmas Eve, the presentation from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. will be followed by candlelight Communion.

OAK GROVE CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN, 2138 McVitty Road S.W., will have a 6:30 p.m. Christmas Eve family service by candlelight.

SALLY AHNER a former Roanoker, who is now a professor of voice at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., will be guest soloist for the Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m. at West End United Methodist Church. She will augment the music of the West End Choir for the Lessons and Carols service at the church on 13th Street at Campbell Avenue Southwest.
