RELIGION BRIEFS

With Christmas on Sunday this year, many churches have canceled Sunday school programs and have scheduled one service of worship at 11 a.m.

ROANOKE VALLEY CATHEDRAL OF PRAISE, 8100 Angel Lane, Hollins, plans only a 6 p.m. service on Christmas Day.

AT GRACE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 4404 Williamson Road N.W., Communion will be celebrated on Christmas Eve at 7 p.m. The church also will have a watchnight service Dec. 31 beginning at 7 p.m.

CHRISTMAS EVE COMMUNION is planned Saturday at 10 p.m. at Ridgewood Baptist Church, 703 Hemlock Road N.W.

AN ECUMENICAL SERVICE will take place Christmas Eve at 11 p.m. in Buchanan at the Presbyterian Church. It will be by candlelight. Trinity United Methodist plans an earlier service for the family at 6:30 p.m.

BETHANY CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 3115 Fleming Ave. N.W., presents its cantata, "More Than a Manger," tonight at 7. The Disciples of Christ congregation also will gather by candlelight on Christmas Eve at 5:30 p.m.

ST. JAMES EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 4515 Delray St. N.W., will have a concert of Christmas anthems at 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Festival Eucharist will begin at 11 p.m. On Sunday, Communion will be administered at 10 a.m.

TWO CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICES are planned at Bonsack United Methodist Church, 4493 Bonsack Road. At 5:30 p.m., the family worship will include a tableau. The 7:30 p.m. service features special music and Communion by candlelight.

AN ECUMENICAL SERVICE will be held on Christmas Eve at 11 p.m. at Fincastle Presbyterian Church. Holy Communion will follow a message by the Rev. John Armistead of Fincastle Baptist Church.

CONNELLY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH, 3907 Hershberger Road N.W., will present a nativity tableau on its lawn tonight and Friday from 6:30 to 8:30. On Christmas Eve, the presentation from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. will be followed by candlelight Communion.

TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4040 Williamson Road N.W., has scheduled a nativity tableau on the lawn tonight through Saturday. The Thursday and Friday night showings will be from 7 to 9. On Christmas Eve, the presentation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. and followed by a family service.

SALLY AHNER a former Roanoker, who is now a professor of voice at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., will be guest soloist for the Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m. at West End United Methodist Church. She will augment the music of the West End Choir for the Lessons and Carols service at the church on 13th Street at Campbell Avenue Southwest.

VINTON BAPTIST CHURCH, Washington Street in downtown Vinton, will have Christmas Eve services at 4 p.m. for children and 7 p.m. with music by candlelight.

ST. TIMOTHY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1201 Hardy Road, Vinton, will celebrate Communion by candlelight with special music at 11 p.m. Christmas Eve.

SALEM WESLEYAN CHURCH, 424 Chamberlain Lane, will have the cantata, "Born a King," sung by the Sanctuary Choir at 11 a.m. Christmas Day. The cantata replaces the usual Sunday schedule. A special New Year's Communion is planned for Jan. 1 at 11 a.m.

SALEM PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, Main and Market in downtown Salem, has scheduled a Christmas Eve family service at 5 p.m. with a children's pageant, "The Shepherd's Story," and special music. Communion by candlelight will be available at the 11 p.m. service, which is new at the church this year.

ECKANKAR DISCUSSION, a book study for spiritual growth, will take place Tuesday at 8 p.m. at 2400 Gate House Lane in Salem. Call 389-8043 for more information.
