Biology study grant

WYTHEVILLE - Donald W. Linzey of Blacksburg, professor of biology at Wytheville Community College, has been granted a Virginia Community College System Professional Development Research Award of nearly $5,000.

Linzey's biochemical investigation will establish baseline data to document and measure the decline of amphibian populations in Bermuda. He will go there with a student research assistant in March.

Their first task will be to identify populations of tree frogs and toads in protected areas where long-term studies can continue without interruption.

Linzey said the frogs and toads they will study represent the northernmost populations of these amphibians in the world. He said the study will benefit students and the college, and could result in findings with relevance to other populations, including humans.

Linzey has been instrumental in establishing the Wytheville Community College science fair, which is held annually in cooperation with New River Community College at Dublin.

Cellular phone ban

WYTHEVILLE - Wythe County Community Hospital has banned the use of cellular telephones inside the facility because they interfere with some hospital equipment.

The policy is necessary to avoid risks to equipment that could compromise patient care, said Becky Hudson, safety/quality manager.

``While we have had no reported incidents of cellular telephones interfering with our equipment, we are taking proactive preventive measures to ensure it never happens,'' she said.

Hospital officials said research has shown that radio frequency interference generated by cellular phone transmitters can affect various kinds of monitors, incubators, ventilators, infusion pumps, blood warmers, power wheelchairs and fire alarms.

Scholarship funded

WYTHEVILLE - A scholarship honoring the late Phillip Price, who was head of the Wytheville Community College dental hygiene program, has been established at the college to provide financial aid to dental hygiene students.

Price, who died Dec. 13, had been a dental hygiene faculty member since August 1988. He was instrumental in developing the program, secured full accreditation for it and was its first director.

Further information about the scholarship fund is available from college President William F. Snyder or the Wytheville Community College Educational Foundation (telephone 228-5541).
