WOMAN: I GOT AIDS FROM DRIVER

A former beauty queen and actress says race car driver Tim Richmond infected her with the AIDS virus on the night he proposed marriage, three years before he died of the disease.

LaGena Lookabill Greene, 33, told The Charlotte Observer in a front-page story published Sunday that she wanted to publicize her condition to draw attention to the growing number of women with AIDS. Greene said she is now suffering the ravages of the disease.

Greene said she met Richmond in 1980, when she was the Miss World 600 beauty queen and he was Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year. She said they dated sporadically as she pursued an acting career in Los Angeles, with roles in such television shows as ``Remington Steele'' and ``St. Elsewhere.''

Richmond moved from Indy-car racing to stock cars, and became one of the great young stars on the Winston Cup circuit. He had 13 career victories, including seven in 1986, when he was third in the Winston Cup points championship.

Richmond was 34 at the time of his death, in 1989.

Green said she was infected in 1986 during an extravagant trip in which the couple flew to New York for dinner and Richmond proposed. She was diagnosed HIV positive in 1987.

R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., whose Winston brand is the sponsor of NASCAR's top stock car series, announced it will add $500,000 to the 1995 season points fund, raising the total to $3.5 million.

The Winston Cup champion will get at least $75,000 of that, with the title payoff raised to $1.3 million.

On Saturday night, Busch Beer, the series sponsor, for NASCAR's Grand National cars, announced that its part of that points fund would be raised from $100,000 to $250,000 for 1995.
