Featured works

Watercolorist Judy Bates of Salem will be featured twice in spring issues of ``American Artist'' magazine. Her painting, ``St. Anthony's Vista #1,'' will appear on the cover of the national magazine's March issue.

Bates has exhibited locally at Roanoke College and Hollins College, and as a member of the Virginia Watercolor Society. Her work is also shown in galleries in Boston and Richmond.

This month, Bates' studio series, ``Color and Composition,'' will be held at the Reynolds Homestead, Critz. She will focus on the dynamic relationship between color and composition. For more information on these classes, call 694-7181.

Inventions on display

The Harrison Museum of African American Culture will exhibit``African-American Creative Genius: A Sample of Inventions'' from Feb. 15 through March 31.

Black Americans contributed to the reshaping of the mechanical world with new inventions and remade old machines that save labor, reduced manufacturing costs and eased the tasks of everyday life. This exhibit looks at the genius shown by these inventors and calls attention to devices used every day.

The museum is at 523 Harrison Ave. N.W. and is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, 1-5 p.m. For more information, call 345-4818.

Childfree conference

The ChildFree Network, the national support and advocacy group for adults who are childless by choice or by chance, will hold its first national conference on childfree living in Las Vegas from March 30 - April 2.

Seminars will include world environmental and population issues; relationship tips for married childfrees; countering workplace, tax and societal discrimination; dealing with infertility and living a productive life childfree; money, travel and retirement tips; and business and computer networking. An awards banquet, cocktail parties, tours and other activities also will be offered.

The conference fee is $65. A double-occupany package rate of $194 covers hotel, meals and events other than the conference; single-occupany rate is $298.

Teen weekend

A teen weekend for ages 13 to 18 will be held at the Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Center from Feb. 10-12. The theme for the weekend is Mardi Gras.

Participants can choose from several workshops, including skeet shooting, self-defense, line dancing, body building and Mardi Gras mask design. A Mardi Gras party will highlight Saturday evening.

The $39.55 fee includes four meals, housing and all program expenses.

The weekend, sponsored by the Virginia Cooperative Extension program, is limited to 120 teens. To register, call 857-7915.
