MINUTEMEN SHOOT DOWN APPOMATTOX

Liberty led by 10 points in the fourth quarter, but Appomattox was able to make it interesting because of poor free-throw shooting before the Minutemen prevailed 65-62 on Tuesday night in a Seminole District boys' matchup.

The Minutemen (8-1 overall, 8-1 district) went 9-for-22 from the line for the game, including 4-for-12 in the fourth quarter. Four of the misses were the front ends of one-and-ones.

Liberty had five scorers score in double figures - Mike Padgett with 14 points, Stephen Shrader with 12 and Gregg Reynolds, J.J, Coles and Brian Long with 10 each.

For Appomattox, Ben Brown had 23 points, Brian Goodrich 18 and Daniel Evans 15.

Pulaski County 57

Heritage 51

LYNCHBURG - The Cougars rallied in the second half with leading scorer Eric Webb on the bench to beat the Pioneers in non-district action.

Webb led Pulaski County in scoring, despite his foul trouble, with 18 points. Jamar McNair added 10 for the Cougars.

Calvin Buck led Heritage with 12 points.

Galax 53

Shawsville 44

GALAX - The Maroon Tide built a 21-point lead, then held off a late Shawnees run to post the non-district victory.

Galax (6-2) led 46-25 through three quarters and cleared its bench for the fourth quarter. Working against the Galax reserves, Shawsville (1-8) cut its deficit to six points before running out of steam.

Jeff Ross led the Maroon Tide with 11 points. Galax's leading scorer, Tito Crockett, was saddled by foul problems throughout and scored four points, 11 off his average.

Corey Dow led the Shawnees with 13 points.

Rocky Gap 80

Giles 75

ROCKY GAP - The Spartans outscored the Eagles in the last three quarters, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 17-point deficit as Rocky Gap held on for a non-district victory.

Nathan Blessing sparked the Eagles (5-3) early, scoring 12 points in the first quarter. Blessing finished the game with 21 points and 13 rebounds - both game highs.

Twin brothers Anthony and Aaron Meyers led Giles (3-4) back, combining for 34 points. Anthony finished with 18 points and Aaron scored 16, including two 3-pointers. John King tossed in 13 points, nine in the third.

The Spartans, who still were down by seven, had to play catch-up in the fourth quarter and were forced to foul. Tracy Bradshaw went to the line 11 times in the quarter and converted nine attempts. The Eagles as a team were 31-of-36 for the game from the line. Bradshaw ended the game with a total of 21 points, matching the game high.

Eric Faulkner had 14 points and six assists for Rocky Gap. Kelly DeHart and Will Dodson each added 11 for the Eagles.

Bland 57

Radford 41

RADFORD - Shannon Havens scored 17 points to lead the Rockets past the Bobcats in a non-district game.

David Lambert added 13 points for Bland (4-2).

Radford (4-5) cut its deficit to three points in the third quarter, but the Rockets outscored the Bobcats by 10 in the fourth quarter.

D.J. Jones led Radford with 18 points.

Fort Chiswell 76

Auburn 58

FORT CHISWELL - The Pioneers held the Eagles to 27 points in the second half, and Fort Chiswell went 9-for-15 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to pull off the non-district upset.

The Pioneers (4-4) were greatly aided by 23 offensive rebounds, 10 by Tony Chrisley to go with his 17 points. Jody Burnett tossed in 19 points.

Auburn (7-3) was led by Jon Reed with 21 points and Terry Millirons with 16.

Gateway Christian 53

Christian Heritage 30

ROCKY MOUNT - Aaron Meadows scored 13 points and Scott Perfater had 11 points and 14 rebounds as the Crusaders routed Christian Heritage in a non-district game.

Gateway Christian (5-4) took a 25-7 halftime lead and never trailed. The Crusaders outrebounded Christian Heritage and used a zone defense to force the smaller team to commit numerous turnovers.

Chris Kirtner had 10 rebounds for Gateway Christian.

Brandon Montgomery and Charlie Cole each had eight points for Christian Heritage (0-2).
