D.C. ESCAPEE CAUGHT IN PETERSBURG

An inmate who escaped from a Washington, D.C., jail was captured along with his wife - a guard at the jail who had married him under an assumed name and later helped him gain his short-lived freedom, authorities said.

Forte was serving 25 years to life for rape and armed robbery charges.

Alphonso William Forte, 29, and his wife, Janice Hubbard Forte, 33, were arrested by federal marshals about 1:30 p.m. Sunday as they arrived at a Western Union outlet at a supermarket.

They are being held without bond at the Petersburg jail pending arraignment in Petersburg General District Court today, authorities said.

The Fox television network had profiled Alphonso Forte on its ``America's Most Wanted'' show Saturday night, and U.S. Marshals received a tip shortly after the show that he would be at a Petersburg Western Union outlet Sunday.
